The calls for land expropriation and nationalisation without compensation just seem to get louder and more relentless. It is becoming clear that they are not going to stop until they get what they want. We may be able to peacefully enjoy a cricket match today, but I gravely fear for the future. Listening to the extreme and radical rhetoric from the ANCYL (who are inevitably the next generation of political leadership) I can't see that these people will suddenly become reasonable when it is their turn to hold office. This is exactly the same predictable pattern that the rest of post-colonial Africa has followed. The initial hope and euphoria of independence gives way to the reality of running a country without sufficient skills, the masses grow disillusioned and restless, the ruling party finds the only way it can cling to power is to pander to populism.
