Is this expensive ?
Please advise:
Someone with a business told me that they want a service provider to design a new website and a mobi site for them, host it and also provide the following service: admeter 20% Google, 80% search.
I presume that makes sense to you? Since I am not in IT, it is a little Greek to me.
Anyhow, the quote they got for doing all the above is R74 000 for a 12 month period.
Is it exorbitant ?
Sounds way over the top - but then it depends how complicated the site is, what's it written in, type of content on the site, how long will it take them to develop, how much traffic will there be to the site?
Does the 74k for the year include development changes to the site?
Can't really say without providing lots more info - if its a simple site then its a complete ripoff. If its like amazon which includes a payment gateway then it may be priced correctly?
I'd advise them to get 2 or 3 quotes.

you get coders from all over the world bidding, they could probably get an awesome site done for a fraction of that cost.

only 8 pages! Good grief! To give you some idea - you can host a site a poweb for $3.88 a month - unlimited traffic, unlimited space allowed.
They are either ripping you off on hosting fees or development fees, or both. I'd also stay away.
Is the site written in html/php/dreamweaver etc?

8 pages, again depending on what the content is (flash, java, sql, etc.), around R5k per page? That is what I was quoted a while back (2007), so I decided to do it myself.
Hosting, dedicated or shared? Dedicated, around R1500-00 p/m depending on host.
And you can clearly see the cost sky rocketing depending on what you want and need.
Without knowing what the site will be needed for, how flashy or complicated it is going to be, or what they want to accomplish with the site, it is impossible to give an estimate.
Best is to get 3-4 quotes from various sources, then you have a ball-park figure to work from.
Also, ask the developer to show you some of their work so you can judge if they know what they are doing, there are a lot of fly by nights out there! Usually the more established developers are very proud to show of their talent (other websites they designed) since it should be like a calling card.

I am willing to bet R100 that the people who quoted were going to spend 10 minutes throwing up a Wordpress site on cheap shared hosting, and with a slightly customised free theme.
Total cost to them: 10 minutes time, plus about R200 for buying domain and hosting on some cheap server.

Also depends on the site etc.
That price is high if its for a website and hosting.
If they're gonna spend R70k on Google ads then its cheap.

They apparently gave a guarantee that if you e.g. type in 'ayurvedic' , then the business' website will appear on page 1 of Google search.
