Golf's are easy to work on and cheap to maintain.
Some years ago I helped a mate service his gf's city golf, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, oil etc came to something like R300! They were like wtf that's cheap compared to having it done at a stealership, I was rewarded for my labour with a braai, a case of beers and a bottle of wine and the whole job only took like 30-45min.

The next service he did on his own after I showed him everything.

People don't realise just how easy it is to service older Golfs and Citi Golfs.

No specialised tools needed at all - just a socket for the sump plug, and a plug spanner, and you are "equipped" as far as tools go.

Getting the oil filter off the first time after someone else has put it on is possibly the most difficult thing apart from finding a place for the old oil, and Bob's your auntie, you have just saved yourself a good grand or two!

Really now... take my advice, do not under any circumstance use a stearlership if you have a choice...

My car cut out this morning, engine died.. popped the bonnet and saw that the airfilter hose was not tightened and came off, had to put it back on and everything was fine. Stearlership mechanics...

I could sue but hey ho...

Reminds me of the time my car was at the stealership for a service (maintenance plan) and I got a call saying my ABS system is faulty and they will have to fix it for Rxxx extra. I asked why they think the ABS system is faulty and they transferred me to the mech. for a explanantion to which he told me "When you turn the ignition key the ABS light comes on, so it's faulty". I was speechless for a few seconds while thinking of a polite reply. I ended up telling the guy that it's normal for the ABS light to come on when you turn the ignition as it's a diagnostic indicator that it's fine (if it stays lit then it's faulty) and not to worry about fixing it. The very same morning before I dropped the car off I actually had the ABS kick when some poephol stopped in the middle of the road and it was working fine afterwards as well. they probably thought they were gonna scam some money out of me.
