It's been like 3 years now since I rented a DVD, since I got internet things is just so much better.
When renting a movie, you always have to worry about getting the DVD back before 11am the next day and that is why people dont rent movies.
Secondly, most of the time you get home the damn thing is scratched and you cant watch it, then you must please explain why the DVD wont work when taking it back.
Renting movies is so 1990's. I'd rather download the movie and watch it when I have the time and then delete it.
Video-on-demand will never be big here in SA because of the lack of fast internet connectivity and the cost of it, most south africans cant affort Premium DSTV to use box office.
So Mr.Video & Vee's Video, just get over yourselfs and close down all your shops because dvd rentings it only going to decline from now on and in 5 years you may just as well close your doors.
Here at my work there is a PC dedicated to us people who want movies and series, we just go to that PC and copy the things we want and copy the new stuff we got at home to the PC for the others.

People still use dvds? Kind of archaic, isn't it?

how about:
Increasing hiring costs
non availability of latest titles
Limited blu ray selections
Scratched disks
inconvenience of hiring, selecting and returning title.
not everyone is familiar with movie downloading or video on demand, so ultimately the real villain is the vendor on the street corner pushing the latest releases for R10.
There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.

So I downloaded a movie and now I am guilty of "far more hideous crimes such as child abuse, terrorism and human trafficking" LOL! Are all people called Scott working in the entertainment game complete tossers?![]()

Video stores are outdated. The business model is outdated. Video on demand is where it's at now, ****ing face it and stop putting the blame on torrents. I'm sick of the internet being blamed the whole time, its not the internet. Look how well Netflix is doing while people still pirate....
Hey I still use video stores...
...to hire games and burn them.

Why don't they create a digital Renting machine place it in all stores LOL
Like the once u purchase airtime and cigarets from.
Just stuck in your Flash-drive select movie , stuck in your Bank note or coins and its copies the movie to your flashdrive
and u have 24hours to view the movie.
Yip and if u have no flashdrive u can purchase one from the same vending machine LOL.
This is my idea and this thread is proof of patent Lmj
I bought an account with a Blockbusters store sometime in January last year for 30 movies. We go to the shop to rent movies maybe once a month and most of the time under new releases are the movies from the previous month still. It takes them ages to get new movies, but the reason I use Blockbuster is because they don't charge you a ridiculous fee for late returns.
We once used Mr Video when we went to visit family and returned the movie a day later and IIRC the fee was about R50. I told them I don't have the cash on me and never returned. Mr Video is a rip-off and I wont use them ever again.
I do get most of my movies from torrents and when we are at home we just use DSTV on demand for the convenience. It is still nice though to use a video store when going to visit friends and that don't have DSTV on demand or the internet.
If the video stores actually did something to improve their business model I am sure there are still lots of cash to be made. The majority of people in South Africa still don't have access to the internet to download movies and as the article states DSTV on demand don't have a real influence in the market.
