Thread: Who is killing South Africa's video stores?

Video stores are really old. You cannot expect something made long time ago to last till the world ends.

They sell them. After 3 months you rather have 1 obsolete disk than 20.
Everyone gets to see the latest releases within a couple of months
    After that, it just sits.

You mean like brothels and escort agencies?

It's called natural selection apparently. People chose torrents and the internet over round flat discs that are prone to issues. The number of times I've rented a movie and had to return it without being able to watch it... Far more reliable to download.

I think he was referring to something manmade. People don't go to brothels for the brothel
Now if someone could come up with an electronic rental option that replaces the need for discs... like... you rent a flash stick from the store.

Or online rentals... on demand delivery is still way behind to be the culprit though IMO.

And you don't go to a video store for the store.
Think about it a lady of the night is analogous to a disk.
Everybody goes out to 'hire' the item but when it's scratched and damaged nobody wants it.

Let me spell it out for you... sex will never go out of fashion as long as men and women are made the way they have been for EVER. THAT was my point
A lady of the night... or any lady for that matter... is not analogous to a disk in this instance. There will always be apparently unscratched models on the shelf and younger ones to replace the aging ones.

not everyone is familiar with movie downloading or video on demand, so ultimately the real villain is the vendor on the street corner pushing the latest releases for R10.
I think the monopolisation of the industry by the Nu Metros is really what is killing the video shop. I hire videos from Mr Video, they have a R25 for two movies special.

I do not buy pirated movies because of the quality of these movies. Further, you cannot blame piracy because I still see the same numbers of people (customers) at the video shops as I used to see 10 years ago. So, in my opinion their margins are being reduced by the increased costs of buying videos from Nu Metro.

Piracy is affecting video rentals but it is monopoly that is the greater evil.

I feel for you. I was forced to close my 8track store when iTunes started

I disagree .Sex goes out of fashion when you get married.
As for your second point I won't argue since you seem to be the expert.

Why don't some of the stores offer a download service? I'd rather pay for, and download a movie than just torrent it, and watch without paying (which I feel is not right).

Besides, I think there's a lot of people who's feeling the same about paying for, and watching something.

Warner Bros et al need to rethink their business model seriously.

Christ-mass is NOT for Christians. Jeremiah 10.
Is the 10 Commandments for Christians?

Saturday is the Seventh day, Sunday is the first day.

This morning we did some shopping. When we arrived there was a commotion by the one stall. Very busy. We went inside.

We come outside and make a turn by the stall. 3 boxes. 3 guys. Movies and music dvds. By the door of a shopping complex. This would be the start of the problem. There is no policing. So stop crying about the internet, get off your butts and bust all these dealers. Its a start at least.

Or memory stick with drm. I mean if I'm gonna pirate a movie I'm going to do it one way or the other.

I think Multichoice's Blockbuster feature is a much bigger threat than even those dodgy chaps peddling written DVDs.

I personally see no point in video renting stores.

Last time I rented was when I lived with my parents. Nowadays I just go out if I want to see a flick or download it. What would make me stop downloading them? Well for starters do away with the ****ed up zone release bull**** and give me proper HD streaming. Problem is that entities like numetro and dstv wants to **** you over for your money and give you little in return.

Only thing that is killing them imho is greed.
