Thread: LHC Claims new particle discovery

More work will be needed to be certain that what they see is a Higgs, however.
    ...
Indications are strong, but it remains to be seen whether the particle the team reports is in fact the Higgs - those answers will certainly not come on Wednesday.
So what exactly is new with this announcement ?

It is just as much prove for both arguments as what gravity is prove for or against it.
.... and thanks for all the fish.

A few weeks ago they discovered 2 new elements, and now this.
amazing to think what we have accomplished in the last 50 years. (or even, in the last 20 years)

Are there any smart guys out there that can fill us in on the real world implications of this discovery? (minus the fact that it confirms our prev understanding of particles)

2 new elements a few weeks ago? You sure you not referring to the 2 discovered last year?

We can now build port replicators and tractor beams, also this allow us to get sustained warp drives

Well to be honest in everyday life, not much if anything at all. It just narrows down some theories, ie what direction some people have to go to find a unified theory.

Edit: Wait a minute.... It has not been confirmed yet so can still be anything. Its just that they found something with more or less the right values. Moving on...

...it's probably when they were officially named, approved and added - sorry for the mistake.

Dam brain... I meant to say replicators as in Star Trek, while sorting out network problems = bad idea

Thanx for highlighting the error in my joke.

No nothing of that sort, it really just fills a gap in our standard model of particle physics.

Well, everything points towards the Higgs, they're just trying to see the spins. Spin 0, in fact. And then, they dance.

I don't see how the Higgs explains anything. If it decays after it's created then there's still no answer what gives particles their current mass.

You go tell all those hundreds(thousands?) of silly PhD physicists that Swa! Go tell them!
