They suggest that descriptors such as Yum, and Yuk, be used instead of traditional wine-review terminology
True wine affeciandos need better descriptors for the drinking experience .. OK, maybe 'sweaty saddle' bouquet is over the top, but wine drinkers who can only come up with Yum- & Yuk-descriptors should stick to drinking their wine[sic] out of a cardboard box![]()
the purpose of the site (and app) was not to appeal to wine affciandos. i agree more descriptors would be better.
they really need to look into the speed of the android app.
Do NOT construe anything I type as advice
I tried this on my Galaxy S3... It's a great idea and the app initially looks good, BUT..Sheesh it's slow.. once the rendering issues are sorted out it should be brilliant.
Hey everybody! Thanks so much for trying it out. Lemme try fill in some gaps, back story and answer some questions. Love the feedback, hit me up with anything...
@Whackjob We've just pushed an update for Android phones (specifically HTC and the S3) - should be fixed! Please try again and let me know... We've been checking on Twitter and speed improvements seem to be quite drastic for most android users. (I feel your pain, tested on an HTC OneX and OMG it was slow - but should be fixed now)
Ok, so here's some background context to what we're trying to do.
a) I hate the 5* scale and "out of 10" scale because everything tends towards the average. First 1000 Real Time Wine reviews, did some data analysis - it showed the average score for red = 6.2 and whites = 6.7. That tells me NOTHING. So. Wanted to polarise opinion (more value if there's not too much fence sitting). And I wanted to make the scale accessible. Love it = YUM. Think it's average = HMM, Don't love it/hate it = YUK.
b) there are 2 levels of rating. Quick, drop in down out "just give your opinion" which is the smiley icons (quick rate). And then, there are the Check Ins and optional reviews. If you do both, we essentially have a YUM/HMM/YUK spread and some semantic data on the words you chose to describe your "wine moment". The scale + the words should theoretically give us some interesting info. And should give you as our user, the ability to give a solid opinion and be creative in your "review".
c) wine can be totally poncy, and that serves to make the culture of wine drinking inner circle and inaccessible. Therefore we have our "banned words". Try put a couple in a review and see what happens - like "sweaty saddle"
Hope we can convince you to give it another try!
The speed is not too bad on my Motorola Atrix , where was this app when I was at the Wacky Wine Festival :-0
We need to look at festivals for future marketing promoFishMan... If I could ask a huge favour, got some fairly negative reviews on Google Play store when we launched due to a speed bug. That's fixed. If it's rocking for you, a little review and a nice rating would go a long way! https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result
Andy, are the wines rated per vintage? Even a Meerlust Rubicon will taste schit in its first year. The other issue here is that often these wines are drunk far too early, like some of the red 2011s being reviewed. I like the app though - runs perfectly smooth on my S3. Problem is I'm in Singapore so what's your stance on international wines? I see they're priced in Rs...
