Thread: Smart TV (Plex support?) and 3D TV recommendation

Default Smart TV (Plex support?) and 3D TV recommendation

I'm looking for a recommendation for a new tv. Don't care if it's plasma or led. Has to be at least 47" and 3D, and I'm also looking to replace my media pc, so Plex support would be great. Budget is around R10 000. Are there anything available for this price?

I've got Plex running on my BD 5500 ... it stutters though.

That's hardwired and I've played with the buffer. I can't understand why as the files are not huge and the PC is a Core 2 Quad with 4GB RAM - should be alright. However because I can't get Plex to work correctly, I'm going to be getting an HP microserver in future.

Other than that, if it does work remember there is NO photo or music capability - only videos.

EDIT Available in the app store for Blu Ray players currently -p TV to follow. However Roman will tell you how you can download it in the mean time

Are there any standalone device (not a pc) that can run something like XBMC? I know the Apple TV2 can, but only in 720P. :-/

Yes, you shouldn't encounter issues with files < 25Mbps bitrate across the wire i.e. < 12GB

As mentioned before, in my experience it always boils down to network performance. Some things you can try ...

    - Upgrade BD player to latest firmware
    - Upgrade Plex client to latest version (from the apps store)
    - Upgrade NIC driver on server to latest version
    - Try cross over cable between server & BD player to eliminate all other network equipment (consumer grade stuff is not always optimal)
Still here ... FTL drives offline

On the performance issue, I seem to the only one having an issue - so I wouldn't *really* worry about it

However the music thing may annoy you - as I have a large collection I'd like to stream to the hi fi!

The other stand alone item I remember was R3+k ... Xstreamer Ultra

Done each of those barring the NIC driver - which I think may be updated.

    Could be my cable maybe?

I'm not sure - but I know I seem to be the only one having an issue

Well yes - but it doesn't look like one?

Yeah, photos would be nice too. According to the developer they're on the roadmap. I see they've put in the menu placeholders in the latest client, so looks like progress.

Yep, or a jailbroken AppleTV2 but it also doesnt support music or photos. Ultimate would be (if you're flush) a Mac Mini at 6K.

I also have the performance issue, but that's because I have an E-series Blu-ray player (BD-E5900).

What's wrong with playing music through the normal DLNA system of the player (Allshare)? The main purpose of Plex is the metadata, and if you're going to be playing music to a hi-fi you wouldn't get that anyway...
So y'all need to hide yo uzis, hide yo assault rifles and hide yo bazookas 'cos they disarmin' everybody out here!

How do you navigate without the screen though?

And if it's on screen, I'd like album art etc

Well apparently the new version of PMS does pass on the album art correctly through DLNA. I don't know, haven't downloaded it yet, I just read the release notes when it came out last night. And navigation, works just the same as it would in Plex, in fact PMS creates the same folders you find under music, in the DLNA folders as well, so you can view by date, artist or whatever.

Does Plex work on E-series Samsung tv's?

    Compatibility chart http://plexforsamsung.pbworks.com/w/...sung%20devices

EDIT : Not the one I was looking for though. I'll check more - but should be on the Plex forum and mention stuttering, sound and other issues with each model
