Default iPad for travel photo storage

Going overseas in two months, contemplating leaving the netbook at home and just taking a 64Gb iPad *cough* 3 with me - and of course the camera connection kit (CCK).

Memory wise, 64Gb will be more than enough. I'm getting conflicting reports though on the feasibility of using the iPad in this manner - workability, lost data on connection etc. etc. etc.

Any thought or experience on the matter?

    Thanks!

I recently had a holiday overseas and we took our SLR and 2 iPads.
We used an Eye-Fi card for transferring images to the iPads. (Though I believe you could use a CCK if you want).
We used Snapseed to edit photos, and backed them up using a combination of dropbox, facebook and photostream (though availability would depend on the countries you're visiting).

Snapseed is pretty awesome, and did all we wanted and more.

    Thanks for that!

Snapseed is pretty awesome. Plan is to use ipad as backup, together with multiple SD cards. And of course the ability to view and cull photos on the retina display - so that when we're back I can simply dump the culled collection to my pc and take it from there.

    BTW were your ipads jailbroken?

I'm think multiple eye-fi SD cards are going to work out too expensive. Rather going to take a few normal ones and use them once.

Would that have made a difference? Serious question.

Also, how much do these cck's go for?

I am not too sure how the CCK works, but don't make the same mistake as I did. Used the iPad as a storage device and decided to take only one 2gb memory card. It worked fine, copied the photo's over to the iPad and deleted the photo's on the memory card. Got home and decided to copy the rest of the photo's onto my iPad via iTunes and it deleted all my previous photo's

So it works nicely for storage, but make sure you got backups. Not a nice feeling of not being able to brag to your friends and family by showing them where you been.

Simply wondered whether you could use eye-fi cards to copy directly to the ipad without jailbreak.

    CCK approx R250 iirc.

Yes, both the eye fi and shuttersnitch apps work well.

I'm currently on holiday and I'm shooting medium jpgs to my 16gb iPad via SD card (eyefi and cck) and keeping the raw files on cf cards for when I get back.

Yes, I did this and it works very well. I got a camera adaptor which reads SD cards

The new iPad has such an amazing display, really shows your photos off.

Try to bring enough cards that you don't have to format any while you're away. That way if someone helps themselves to your iPad you still have the files.

iphoto is a pretty good app. Probably even better than snapseed.

That is exactly the plan. We're two couples. I'll keep the daily backed up iPad with me. The other couple keeps my used SD cards. I'm paranoid like that.

In 2002 I formatted a SD card with two days' shooting in Rome...a lesson learnt which I'll never forget.
