Default British type telephone RJ11 conversion

Hi guys not sure if this is the right thread to place this but here goes

I have one of these old type British telephones http://www.britishtelephones.com/pye/1806.htm and I was wondering if anyone can instruct me how to fit a RJ11 connector onto it? I popped open the wall jack it has and it has three cables, so not sure which two to use?

Granted it would negate any option of tone dialing, but I'd still like to give it a try!

    Any help would be appreciated!

Telkom phones work on 2 wires ,sounds like you have a 3 wire cable coming to the Telkom jack the connections are normally on the blue and white wires purple normally spare .
    Are you in SA ??

Yup in SA, it's an old phone of my Gran's - it definitely used to work in her house here, so I was just wondering how if it did in the past (likely on those protea(?) connectors), I can recrimp it with an RJ11 successfully

I've had UK phones converted before - took them to an electronics guy I think. But my question would be, does the pulse dialing still work on our exchanges?

Hmm. http://www.britishtelephones.com/pstconv1.htm#700 You will more than likely find that the process for the Nr 1806 will be very similar to that of the 706, seeing the 1806 is just a cheaper clone of the 706.

Seems like quite a process though - so best of luck!

you may be able to crimp those cords just be aware they are linen cords on those old phones ,a much better idea is to put a small jack in the phone and use a new cord from the inside of the phone to the existing jack RJ11 (wire to the PCB in the phone where the red and black wires on the cord is connected to a small jack in the phone)
BTW the green wire in cord to the jack is not needed.

hi guys thanks for the advice, yeah I saw it was a "cheap" version of the other

Thanks FNfal, that should help, I'll take a look again tonight to see if i can pop open the body of the phone itself.

On another note, it should work fine on Telkom's lines? Just as i said, i'll lose the ability to communicate with tone dial systems?

You may be able to get an protea rj11 converter.

one side has protea socket & other side has rj11.
