Default Brace yourselves as labour bill heads for Parliament

Even before it reaches Parliament, the bill containing amendments to the Labour Relations Act and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act will almost certainly be strengthened in favour of Cosatu – and to the further detriment of employers. Cosatu is now politically so powerful that it has ditched negotiations at Nedlac (where government, business and labour give input) in favour of wringing concessions directly from its governing alliance partner the ANC.
So the exact impact of the bill cannot be predicted at this stage, but experts are certain of two results: first, more employers will mechanise as they perceive employment becoming even more inflexible and costly, and second, workplace litigation at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and bargaining councils will increase.

And the moment mechanisation rises we'll see another legislative "adjustment" to force employers to become more "people-based". Effectively increasing the cost of labour, without passing on the benefits to the labourers, lowering productivity while creating pressure on the labour market as a whole, decreasing the already dwindling pie that everyone is trying to eat from.

While increasing government's role in private sector employment. This is so incredibly moronic, it is difficult to put into words what a failure this will be...

The unemployed should brace themselves, because that is what they will stay. Investors of capital will take their capital somewhere more "capital friendly".

I was taught to strive to be the best that I can be. This government want every body to be mediocre, poor and/or unemployed. Not a very encouraging thing.

Anything that's good for COSATU is bad for the economy, Einstein.
