    Default FNB uses Ubuntu

I just came from FNB White River branch to open my account, I was so amazed to see that they use Ubuntu, looks like an old version I think 8.04 or something, and they use FireFox. no winder why their banking is affordable than ABSA. I wonder how long have they been on Ubuntu

They must have switched from Novell then, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=464361 can't find the original link.

I don't know if it's all over, but I know that FNB Tyger Manor (Just above Tyger Valley, here in CTN) has had Ubuntu running for quite a while - when I went to open my business account in 2010, they were on Ubuntu.

    Was interesting to see!

I just Googled it and found reference to a 2007 thread on here. I knew they were using Ubuntu but didn't realise for such a long time already

A bank is probably an ideal place for linux seeing you don't really have much apps running on the desktop as most stuff is pulled of the servers/mainframes so you really only need a desktop client app (which these days is a web browser probably) to access it.

    Correct.

A huge chunk (if not all) of their daily tasks is run through a browser - the only thing that I have ever seen out of browser is when they open a generated PDF file for printing to a local USB printer.

I wonder what they use for Email though... Webmail interface, Evolution...?

If you looked further, their phones are all IP as well and I heard they use Asterisk. Think their FNB Connect product runs off Asterisk as well.
