Budget camera under R1500
Hi
I am looking for a budget camera with good picture quality, slim design, etc which preferably retails for under R1500.
It doesn't have to have 100's of features which one won't need in any case - just something that shoots good, vibrant pictures as I would need it for travel purposes and other snapshot opportunities. Any camera you guys could recommend?

Just stay away from the Fujifilm S3300 with 26 zoom and 14mp camera. I bought mine for R1800 and the picture quality is crap. I just came back from Tanzania and took 3000 wildlife pictures, and it all looks dull and faded and kinda fuzzy. I am very dissappointed.

Hmm, I took a microfiber cloth with and wiped the lens very often. I think it might be because it was on automatic, and despite having read through manuals and stuff, I don't understand the settings and stuff and kept it on manual. Ill post a pic to show what I mean:

It was about 10 or so zoom if I remember correctly, I wasn't to far from the chimpanzees. The other pics where they were high up in the tree and I used 26 zoom is even worseI kept it on automatic the whole time.

Canon SX150 for R1495...
Nicci, that is some heavy back lighting from the sun. Not ideal. Looks like you dried to recover some detail in the blacks, which caused noise there. Also, your focus appears to be on the one small branch and not on the chimp...

Hmm yes, now I see, the small branch is much clearer than the chimp actually. I did not notice that. Seems then its my picture taking skills and not the camera. Ok, fujifilm is safe to use - just very difficult to understand with all the settings and what not.

As I recommended nicci, go for one of the cannon sx series, I think there is the sx150
I've had the sx100 for about 4 years now and it's still going strong. It's only 10X zoom and 9 mp but that really is enough, even done 2 weddings with it.
Nicci that pic of the man in the tree looks like it focused on the branches, can't really blame the camera for that.

Instead of Auto try the SRAuto mode and check the AF Mode as well (pg 81 of your manual).

Camera seems fine in this instance, this is where technique comes into play.That one branch/leaf is actually pretty sharp now that you mention it
Camera is probably set to spot focus mode or something like that.
Remember, cameras don't necessarily know what you want to take a photo of.
You have to try focus on target, also snap a few pics from different angles and distance to get the best picture.
What I do sometimes, if I want branches or grass in front of the target, I move to an angle where you have a clear view of the target, then focus, then move back where the branches are in the way and you'll get that effect with the target in good focus
In IT this would be a pebkac error.
