In a press statement issued today (7 July 2012) Vodacom announced the launch of all-in-one Smart Plans that include the smartphone, data, talk time and SMS.
    Includes a phone?

The press release was a little unclear, but if they follow the typical way Vodacom lists contract pricing, these will be the base "subscription" costs on top of which phone costs then get added.

With the more expensive contracts (such as the Talk 1000s) phones are often included for "free". It'll be interesting to see what the subsidies on these contracts are like.

Major fail if its meant to compete with Cell C's staright up packages.

Nevermind tha fact that you need a doctorate to work out haw many actual mintes u have & then the rate changes between the lower and upper contracts, then we dont even know if this includes the price of the phone or not!

Cell C is easy : R100 for 100 mins, 100 secs, 100mb data & all calls are 99c, or whatever. This thing from Voda is more confusing that the old model

Although I'm a little disappointed with the pricing scheme one can't help but feel optimistic now that Cell C's pricing structure has forced them to re-adjust - I mean these are reductions.

    Just me or completely underwhelming?

Why the big gap in anytime minutes from 130 to 450? I'm on Talk240, so there goes that option.

And the gap between Light and Standard - 100 to 300 sms's?

With BBM/Whatsapp/iMessage do people still send 400+ sms's per month?

So the Standard voice rate out of bundle is almost double the Light rate?

On the face of it these packages don't make much sense to me.

I do not think it is too bad. I am currently paying R300pm for talk 120. My phones payment is R59, then i have a 30mb data bundle and 200 sms bundle. All comes to around R400 odd.

So migrating to smart data standard, i get 250 minutes, 300mb data and 300 sms monthy for R390. Plus a crap load of other minutes which seems a bit confusing for me.

Edit: never mind. The crap load of other minutes is the 250 allocation. So only 130 normal minutes. Not that great then

The Smart Light plan is billed per minute
    FAIL.

As most users will probably go for Smart Light (the price is similar to the old weekender pricing) they will lose because of this.

Pity also about the short carry-over.

But a step in the right direction nonetheless
