Thread: Manual data recovery from a broken hard drive...:(

OK, if the TVS is working correctly, you'll see the resistance is high, it will actually move (go up as you read). That is normal, leave that one.

Hopefully you have one that reads 0 or close to 0. This means it has shorted. Pull that sucker off and if the damage was limited to the TVS, you're good to go.

Yip. The outside TVS reads zero. The inside one moves up properly as expected. I bought a small sideclipper so I'll pull that sucker off and then give it a go. Phew - scalpel please, nurse...

Looks good. Now the moment of truth. Make sure you connect up the correct power supply this time because your protection is gone

Holy jumping jack MARY! She lives! She really works. She is saved. She has come out of her anesthetic with just a scar to remember this all by.

    SHE REALLY LIVES!

SouthBit and everyone else involved - thank you so much. I cannot extend my gratitude enough. But here are two pics of the 'ol gal in action now:

SouthBit, I could slobberkiss you right now. But considering I'm in Singapore, I'll rather just add a link to your services in my signature. Thank you...

I would suggest you replace that TVS diode you removed with a new one because if you get a spike or have another mishap in future you won't be so lucky again as you have removed the bit of protection it offered (before it died)

    Now go make another backup.
If something is that important you really should have multiple backups of it.

3, 2, 1 backup strategy. Three copies on two different types of media, and one offsite copy.

With Dropbox, Google drive, box.net, etc all throwing free space at new users there's no excuse not to at least backup the most important docs offsite.
