    Default Vodacom BlackBerry Data Charge

    Hi there,

Maybe Ockie or VodacomData can assist but it seems that my SO's blackberry is taking airtime off her phone even though BIS is apparently on. Whether by the onboard browser or whatsapp I dont know but data is apparently being used that is being paid for with airtime.

She uses Opera mini from time to time but she knows that uses her airtime so I'm very doubtful that could be the cause. Can anyone assist?

there is No clear way of knowing what they will charge you for seperately, therefor I reckon its complete fraud/theft billing any BB user for any data other than youtube.

I cant check on billing for PrePaid. Best is to check what apps she has got on there and what she is doing on the phone.

I have checked now on my friends line. She uses a BB 9900...mainly WhatsApp and BBM. No data charges on proposed invoice so it is not WhatsApp doing it. Some kind of app or something that she is doing on the phone is routing data through the "internet" apn by the sounds of it.
Now why you loer en kyk gelyk?
Is ek miskien van goud gemake?

I have the same problem. Everytime I use opera mini or even app world. It never used to use normal rates for opera mini.

    Edit: I'm on topup btw.

I hear you. She is on TopUp aswell. For the interim, I've asked her to wipe the phone clean and start from scratch. Have a funny feeling it might be an app running in the background.

It's a little known fact that BB aps can decide which APN they want to use and can thus drive Internet APN charges up. Unfortunately there is no way to know which app will do this.

I'll drop you a PM so please send me your details and the phone details and we'll see if we can catch the app doing this.

    Why?

If the app developer decides to use the Internet APN, how can you hold the network responsible?

No matter how many times I wiped my Blackberry I couldn't figure out what app was triggering Vodacom's stealth billing so eventually I uninstalled vodacom (aka ported to 8TA) which seems to have solved the problem once and for all.

I don't have a BB, but can't one just wipe the internet APN or deliberately edit the APN with incorrect details? This way you can be sure bill shock won't occur?

    are you mad?

I logged a complaint with vodacom 2 days ago about my BB charges, they were quite quick and happy to provide me with "2 months free BiS" to make up for the charges.

They charged me R78 for "data" on my bb in the past year, they claim to have 2.5 million customers, if they charge on average R78 per BB user over a 1 year period, its R195,000,000 stolen from the ignorant customers, per year. because "ah its only R5" so most people dont bother calling. really think they would make a way to prevent them getting their 195 million fraud money?

So unfortunately they know we can do nothing to stop it, but log a call and they will 'gladly refund u'

    freakin skelms...

I had the same issue. Spent months trying to work out what was taking my airtime and why. I could find no consistent pattern with the apps except for Foursquare - it worked off BIS for months and suddenly one day started stealing airtime. I stopped using it and still had random charges that couldn't be explained. After months of struggling and without Vodacom support being able to explain the issues I gave up and also "uninstalled" Vodacom... ported to 8ta.

I was sad to leave, but have been very happy on 8ta - their value proposition is great and their perks rock. Have had no airtime theft issues with them whatsoever.

Sorry to hear this. When did this happen; when did you first see the usage and when did you port?
