Been poor all my life (coming from a poor village) until I started working. Even after working, I didn't get a paying job for years. So yep, don't want to go back there again. Want to make sure my kids don't go through that again.

I've never lived in my car.

I've been broke. I had to walk everywhere. I lived on toast from work during that time. I would try to sleep through the entire weekend, to sleep through the hunger pains, I didn't work on weekends so I didn't eat. I was buying loose cigarettes with 5c pieces. Smoke them a third at a time. Lived like that for a month, because of an unforeseen expense.
I had about R300 at the start of that month after rent. That money was gone in a week. Started scrounging for brown coins.

Lived in a car for 5 weeks in PE with my (ex) wife. We just go married and everything went south so we left Cape Town for Pretoria and then our car broke down in PE - we where dead broke.

Ended up camping out by Kings Beach Parking lot and made an adventure of it.

Been there more than once in my life. Had to go work in Std 9 to put food on the table after my dad ended up in hospital for a couple of weeks. My brother just came back from the army (broke) and could not find work so I had to also provide for him.

For me these events make one stronger as you get out of it by yourself - relying on charity and hand outs just keeps you down.

I've kind of learned by now if there's ever a time when I really need food there's ALWAYS some kind of work I can do. Restaurants always need dishwashers, factories need shelvers...just whatever...cash in hand and you just work long enough to get through.

/Thankfully that part of my life is over.

Even if I lose all my material possessions, I can still have all the riches I will ever need.

The withdrawal from nicotine (aswell as caffein and sugar on weekends) just made me feel more ill.. I threw up a lot of what I ate during that month.

Cigarettes are quite effective for hunger pains.

You can only imagine how good my payday was.
