Default One band you wondered why they never went big?

There is one band for me that I have always wondered never got huge, or not yet at least, Dishwalla. I got their album Opaline from a mate when he went to Canada about 8 years ago and seriously to this day don't know how they are not HUGE.

If you have never heard Dishwalla, do your ears a favor and get the album Opaline.

You mean the name? Yeah not the most appealing name, but man their music is great.

Yeah I heard a rumour that Soundgarden reunited and are releasing a new album.

The biggest reason for bands not going big is the control of the music industry. There are a gazillion great bands out there but they simply just don't get the airtime on radio. Even in SA we've had some great acts (no, not the kfc parlotones) but they will never materialise to much. A few years ago there were two young laaties playing their own stuff & covers at Cool Runnings in ballito and they were frigging brilliant!!! I don't recall their names or anything but they're probably flipping burgers at macdonalds or doing some other mundane job right now.

I was listening to stuff I found on a hard drive today and while doing so I looked the bands up on wikipedia and Ryuichi Sakamoto summed it pretty well,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryuichi...#Personal_life

He is also known as a critic of copyright law, arguing that it is antiquated in the information age. He argued that in "the last 100 years, only a few organisations have dominated the music world and ripped off both fans and creators" and that "with the internet we are going back to having tribal attitudes towards music."[28]

Its weird that I never heard of Blonde Redhead before hearing the track "Elephant Woman" on the closing credits to the movie 'Hard Candy".

That one song alone has me in awe.
I've yet to get more of their stuff, but I'm sure I'm gonna be blown away too.

And granted that they've got a few albums out and tour, but I've never come across them.

I blame commercial radio too for the lack of potential good/great bands not getting any success.
Large record companies pay to get their product out on the airwaves.

Agreed with the quote in ponder's post; record companies are holding the industry hostage.

I'll always remember Radiohead's stab at EMI and Parlophone records in their album sleeves, where they would thank EMI for the kind permission to publish their own lyrics.

But its a new age and lotsa bands are making headway and gaining exposure without draconian corporates.

I don't want bands, that I like, to go big. Selfish I know.
