Cause there are 7.025 billion of us now? Even if we were totally organic we would still slaughter about 1,600 mammals and birds every second for food – that is half a trillion lives a year, plus trillions more fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Animal pasture land would account for far more than than the current 30% of the Earth's usable surface. Plus we would have to deal with more disease caused by lack of antibiotics, wasting many more animals that will never be eaten...
I think fake meat, if it is safe, tasty and nutritious would be fantastic and we can leave the animals to live to old age in peace.

I have no issue with it, if it looks, tastes and feels the same, why would we care?

If trees could scream would we be so cavalier about cutting them down. What if they screamed all the time for no reason?

If they are not battery, they need more space (we don't have), without antibiotics they are prone to disease, without force feeding we would need to slaughter even more animals to get the same amount of meat...
... and the population is getting bigger and will continue to get bigger and people will still want to eat lots of meat, I don't think that will change. So fake meat would make a huge difference...

I wasn't saying it was worse in that regard, it's not any better tasting, healthier or better then the battery, antibiotic pumped, force fed meat, besides you do know that organic food can also actually be force fed and put in batteries? But yes the biggest issue I have is the fact that it's pure wastefulness, it's not even small little farmers you are supporting, it's the same big companies who supply the other meat as well.

I found this bit interesting:
From the UniverseToday article:
“There would be a lot of benefits from cultured meat,” says Matheny, who studies agricultural economics and public health. “For one thing, you could control the nutrients. For example, most meats are high in the fatty acid Omega 6, which can cause high cholesterol and other health problems. With in vitro meat, you could replace that with Omega 3, which is a healthy fat.”Cultured meat could also reduce the pollution that results from raising livestock, and you wouldn’t need the drugs that are used on animals raised for meat.”
