Thread: Voting Online

    Default Voting Online

What are your thoughts on allowing citizens to vote in Democratic elections online at home? I mean we are able to do almost everything else online, including TAX, so I'm sure that if we put enough thought into it, we could streaming the entire process, and would save us many hours of standing in Q's.

There is an American group, http://cyberthevote.org/ who are petitioning for this idea in the US, and I think SA should follow.

Exactly why would need some serious planning and thought into the programming...Because if we can process billions of R's everyday online, I'm sure we can find a way to do the same with votes

The Americans can do it I think.

It's a great idea though, would be excellent if every household had an Internet connection, could throw referendums at little cost many times a year.

I think it could work, but as mentioned, serious thought would need to be put into the security and application process. I suspect there would still be a need for some kind of "physical" identification process for it to work. Perhaps a month or so before the election day, the public can go to their local municipality and register themselves for online voting. An IEC member could then confirm your identity and issue a One Time Pass code that will be used on voting day, along with your ID number. That will stop duplicates, and lessen the chance of someone using your details to vote.

Of course, the servers hosting the site will need to be able to sustain large numbers of users during voting periods, and almost certainly there'll be some "unfortunate incidents" along the way at the municipalites where people are registered without their consent, meaning they'll need to handle situations where a member of the public issues a complaint that the system records them as registered and/or voted, even though they haven't. Same problem if the voting stations aren't linked online and someone votes online and goes to their local voting station to vote as well.

Still, it could work, in theory...

I think it is a very good idea...of course provided that the security is in place. Face to face verification with your ID book will be required to get your log in details for the voting site and it would need to be linked to voting stations so you cant vote twice.

I really like the bolded part about referendums. This would help the public take a really active part and we could decide on more policies without the government just doing what they want.
