Verso is pretty fuel efficient given its size. Nice reliable family car.

Mazda 5's a lovely car, but that 2l petrol doesn't quite fit in teh fuel-efficient category.

As mentioned look around for some 2nd hand Toyota Versos or VW Tourans. Don't know if they'll fit your price range though.

Honda FRV? although I don't much like the 3 people in the front seat, but you do retain teh boot, unlike most of the 7 seaters.

My baby girl is coming in October, my wife did mention the idea of a new car but I just told her if the Astra made it to 200,000km I see now reason why it can't get to 300,000km

On your budget you should not forget the Meriva :

no, not even close to that... But my wife did buy here a pretty nice opal when she was in Oz recently, guess that's close enough.

Meriva is pretty decent yes, sadly the new ones with the suicide doors are way too expensive. The old one is not bad but since its based on a Corsa C it might be a little too small for the OP.

I've got the 2L Mazda 5 and in town i'm getting not less than 11km/liter
Not too bad in my opinion for the size of car you get.

PS: And too be honest this is hard driving everyday between JHB & PTA in traffic.

Wow, someone I know just got one, don't think she's quite getting that.

Went to Welkom this past weekend with it and gave me 14 km/l on the open road.

Yep, read the review of the Mazda 5 in the last issue of CAR magazine. Although in the end they recommended the Tiguan over it. Having driven a Tiguan for a while I can understand why. Sadly they are too expensive.

    Touran surely? Not tiguan.

I've driven the Mazda 5, it's very comfortable and stable, and fairly zippy for a car of its size.
