    Are the 2 extra channels permanent or just for the Olympics?

    Added additional information to the article.

    MultiChoice said it can't confirm whether it'll keep using the new transponder. Don't know about the other HD channel that'll be running on an existing transponder.

    This confuses me a bit, does it mean that the billion dollar satellite has been sitting up there not using one of its transponders or has the transponder belonged to MC and they're just not using it. Either way seems a huge waste of money, I would have thought a satellite would have everything booked and running as soon as it goes up??

    The signal from the new transponder (on a new satellite) will not be as powerful as PAS-10 and viewers with 60cm dishes will experience more break-up during heavy rain. MC just book time on the satellite which is owned by a French co

    Temporarily if they do.

    The current sats are earmarked to be replaced by IS20, launching beginning of next month (hopefully without incident). I believe MC have a lot more (long term) capacity booked on the new bird, and the migration also includes a switch from DVB-S/MPEG2 to DVB-S2/MPEG4. This should give them a whole lot more capacity (specifically for additional HD channels).

    From the comments on the DSTV forums, its seems their first intent is to fully replicate all the SS channels in HD (up to 8???), after that who knows, they're being very mum about other types of HD channels?

    I hope they get more HD channel soon. In my eyes they are currently wasting the use the of the HD soccer channel. They show live rugby, F1 sessions and other sport on SD, but shows old soccer games or other old sport on the other supersport HD channels.

    Frustrating at times.

    Thumbs down WHO actually knows what MultiChoice have planned ?

    * Upgrades ONLY*

    New satellite launches for DStv

    After the addition of Discovery HD Showcase MultiChoice will not again add another permanent HD bespoke channel and will concentrate on populating its new available channel realm with "upgraded" concurrently-run HD versions of existing channels

    From the horses mouth so to say ...........

    Welcome to the land of obfuscation
