Thread: General Throw out for the Mobile Reps on MyBB

Question General Throw out for the Mobile Reps on MyBB

I recently acquired one of these cards

    Cisco HWIC-3G-GSM

    Here are the specs

Table 1 SKU Description and Supported Frequencies

    HWIC-3G-GSM
    HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS
    Worldwide
    800/850/1900/2100 MHz for WCDMA
    850/900/1800/1900 for EDGE/GPRS

I am looking at the special deals especially Cell C and 8ta ( I checked the 8ta map and it indicates coverage for my area. Cell C also has hi-speed coverage. )

What I would like to know is

1.) If this card is supported on these provider networks ?

2.) How much technical data is provided in respect of APN's and other info in getting the card running on the network ?

It is not really such a big deal ( apart from Cisco of course ) as I have a similar card internal to my laptop.
HHHmmm I wonder if the Sierra 3G card also has a built in GPS like my laptop 3G card ?

Anyway keen to get connected but need to know if , how , where , and the tricks and traps

So let's see those reps earn their commissions

Not sure what you are trying to say. I pointed that WCDMA frequencies are not compatible with Cell C. If you are happy with EDGE/GPRS, it will work, but not on 3G (unless you are in area covered by 2100MHz transmitters - not many).

Re: Cell C offer, sure it will cover Cell C frequencies, but if asking me, I would go to 8ta and pick up E367 R699 modem or MTN at Edgars has less expensive E352/3. Then you can pick up R1299 SIM only 2GBx12 deal from Cell C shop.

TBH not sure myself what I am trying to say -- the "marriage" between the subscriber equipment specs and the NO specs have got me confused -- so much new tech

Here is the spec for the card that is in the 3G WIC

    miniPCI-Express card is a Sierra 8790

    WCDMA 850/1900/2100 MHz

    Voice Support None
    GPS Support Yes
    Sierra Wireless's MC8790 is a 3G Module.
    It's size is 30x51x4.5 mm.
    This module supports GSM,GPRS,EDGE,HSDPA technologies.
MC8790 certifications are PTCRB, IC, FCC, GCF, CE .
The integration support for this module can be found support.
The frequency bands are listed above
Developer support can be found developer support.
    Specfication can be found specs.
Carrier approvals for this module are listed above.
For carrier certifcations and MC8790 pricing, please check Sierra Wireless website.

Far as I can make out Sierra Wireless AirPrime cards are used in a number of other devices supplied in SA ( 3G dongles , routers etc )

So -- with the above info please can you tell me which networks this card will work on , on which frequencies , and at what speeds

    Thanks

Supported, no. You won't be able to phone the helpdesk and get support for this card because none of the networks sell it.

For all South African networks: APN = 'internet', dial up number = *99#

All South African GSM (GPRS/EDGE or 2G) networks use 900MHz and 1800MHz.

MTN, Vodacom and 8ta UMTS (WCDMA/HSPA+ or 3G) networks mainly use 2100MHz.
    Cell-C UMTS (WCDMA/HSPA+ or 3G) network mainly uses 900MHz.

    Great thanks
So then it looks like the 8ta deals are looking promising ( and it looks like I have coverage )
Router is not going to go mobile ( unless sticky fingers get a hold of it )
I wonder if the Cisco has anyway of enabling the GPS side of things ?
Would be very handy to use as a base station -- lots of interesting things could be done.
Are you up to some coding challenges ?

OK now to find some config examples to get it working .............
