So how does one determine if they are connected to an IMAX/ MSAN? and how do we figure out when an upgrade will be coming?

I do hope soon. and hopefully telkom will introduce a pricing structure for VDSL soon. better to know what we are in for.

The MSANs are on field trial 53 of them not all installed yet but they getting there i only know Durban is getting 3 initially dont know where the rest are going. When they switch them on(MSANs) the people wont know they are on them they will run at the same speed as before on the old DSLAMs only later are they going to up the speed to the full 40 meg, just software change.

Yep, just stopped to chat to the techies completing the installation of the one on the cnr of Crestwood & Franschoek in Lonehill. They reconned cutover of 465 & 467 should happen around end of the month.

Drops my local lead from ±4300m (59dB attn) to around 1800m, so no VDSL for me but should get a solid 10Mbps ADSL (& hopefully 20Mbps later).

PS: Anyone know whether Telkom's new MSAN equipment supports ADSL2+ Annex M (potential ±2.5Mbps uplink)?

    Oh well crash and burn!

Our exchange, is slower than a dead horse.

0.8mbps on all my 4meg lines! 600ms to local servers and guess what,

    10210

Is your line syncing? - Yes

Ok then we can't log a fault.

My VDSL line is gone so can't comment on it happy days!

Dont accept their explanation insist on the specialist attending to your complaints .
(sorry bro but how can richmond possibly be congested that town is so small)
And you are 400 metres from the exchange just tell them to fix the problem and remind them you are a business.

They have logged faults only to be closed 1 hour later saying "line syncing".

Log fault again and same story. Asked for the supervisor and guess what he is on lunch (all day).

Tired really am, i have been fighting with the call center for over 1 year now, no idea who call or what to do?

    Shout.

    A lot.

But seriously? I wouldn't know. TBH I never had a single problem with Telkom, Believe it or not. The only thing I can suggest is to keep trying, remind them you are a business, and remind them that you are paying for a 4MB line and its not performing, and as such they have a duty to assist you until it does perform adequately.

Finally i got the answer i was waiting for!

Our exchange only has 8mbps ATM link to the IMAX!!

And we have the following, active on the IMAX:

    16X 4mbps lines = 64mbps
    23X 1mbps lines = 23mbps
    51X 384kbps line = 19.13mbps

    Total of 106.13mbps

Take into account the 20:1 contention ratio gives you 5.3mbps

So Telkom say our exchange is perfect! retards! utter useless.... Basically there is a short fall of 98.13mbps.

So when everyone goes on Facebook & YouTube the internet sucks! sigh!

So imagine after the August upgrades what a nightmare our area will be....

Had the same on the Garden Route Mall DSLAM/IMAX (not sure)
    64 circuit DSLAM had 4 Mb/s backhaul instead of 10 Mb/s originally
    implemented not activated (5 x E1 circuits = 10 Mbs/)
Spoke to the local DSLAM technician and he managed to get it sorted
out after lots of speedtest after hours and plenty of calls to the callcenter
    (waste of time)

So how do you believe does contention work? It's DSL FFS. You cannot expect 1:1 bandwidth. If you don't want a service that is contended, go and purchase Diginet / Metro Ethernet where you get what you pay for.

So sick of companies running critical operations on ADSL lines, and then go and blame Telkom when a service doesn't work as they require it.

    Well,

Got very good news today, in 4 weeks time we will be upgraded to ME (1gbps) backhaul, and 10mbps will be enable on our exchange.

Took alot of phoning and complaining but paid of in the end...

    Can't wait!

@ Savage, i am not running Business Critical as per say, it's just skype and youtube don't even work anymore in our area, so i should shut up and accept that i no long get anything over 0.50mbps on my 4meg line? You pay for a service i would expect it to work at what is advertised on Telkom's website.

If Vodacom, Cell C, MTN or 8ta told you your tower was congested and you could only make a successful call 2 out 10, you would be happy with that?

Don't get me wrong i understand it is contented and i would love a Diginet or ME line but i can't afford R30k per month for a 2meg service, I got quotes from Telkom, but don't see how most if not all of use could afford that with what electricity and other services cost today.

You still don't understand how contention works. You're presuming that everyone is sitting there downloading at the same time, maxing their lines out. If that was to happen in practice Telkom, and South African internet, would have had so many issues, I wouldn't even know where to begin. The fact of the matter, is that contention is worked out based on averages, and the average, indicates that 8mbps is enough to sustain the exchange. Just because there is 200 ports, doesn't mean it requires 200 ports x 10mbps of bandwidth.

So I think we can agree that the best way to get ADSL2+ is to ask all your friends to upgrade and congest the hell out of your exchange... amirite???
