Symantec anti-virus update makes some PCs inoperable

A bug in an update of Symantec Corp’s anti-virus software caused some Windows PCs to crash late this week, making machines inoperable until they were serviced in an embarrassing episode that angered some customers.

This happened about 2.5 years ago. An update was sent out that identified svchost.exe as a virus on XP machines. Clearly Symantec didnt learn the first time.

Symantec is just a horrible virus, sorry anti-virus program.

We have it at work and it causes slowdowns, crashes, error messages galore. It's just crap.

Best to stick with Microsoft Security Essentials then....if there is a problem, there will immediately be a fix via Windows Update.

    Sorted.

Happens with AVG also from time to time, but I still use AVG because it is the best.

Tried about every other Anti-virus and they are all useless, updates are too big and they are slow as hell.

AVG is not bad, especially when using the server version.

Didn't have any problems when running it on file servers at work.

But now I'm cheapskate....don't like to pay R200 - R300 a year for renewals, Microsoft's FREE MSE does the job for me.

And use a bit of common sense....don't try to download stuff from warez sites with AVG, Symantec or McAfee. You wanna go in with a Linux machine.

The same kind of thing happened to McAfee a few years ago and I think they ended up giving 1-2 year subscription renewals for free!
