Thread: Is it OK to leave a 2.5" HDD out of its enclosure?

Default Is it OK to leave a 2.5" HDD out of its enclosure?

As the title states, will this damage the hard drive? I rarely move it around, it just sits there on the table but without an enclosure.

Should be fine, as long as it doesn't get knocked around - also watch the cables; once got something caught in a the cable and pulled my HDD off the surface, needless to say it needed to be replaced after that...

Only if you bump it of the table, then again, if you bump it off the table, the enclosure won't help much anyway

With it being winter and all, it's a bit cruel to leave it exposed...

Seriously, though, as long as it is in a safe place there should be zero problems. Be careful of liquids and (ask marine1) ensure that your pets cannot get near it!

Should be perfectly fine, as long as you don't spill anything on it, knock it around too much, put it in the microwave or throw it up as high as you can in attempt to create "cloud storage"...

At least put it in a anti-static bag.

^ This. For the past two years my external drive is a 200Gb laptop drive in a anti-static bag with the usb cable sticking out. This is because this is a 12mm thick drive as opposed to the normal 9.5mm (I think), still searching for a suitable enclosure. (Also I am lazy)

PS: I have the thing in my laptop bag with the charger and use it maybe 4 times a week.

Not while its on! The anti-static bags are somewhat conductive - not much but they are. Not good to put powered on electronics in them at the same time.
