Yes but for this standalone unit u will have to pay for map upgrades - with the app they are free.

Also, with a standalone unit, to get one for your SO / kids, you have to buy them one whereas the app u can sync to any and all devices linked to your Apple ID at no additional cost

Very cool app. I've got an iPad and bought the tomtom for it. Not so practical lol and I have a standalone tomtom device for my car, they're the same. Google's traffic is awesome for planning your route using the app

ok i think I'm gonna just buy it... i got lost today and couldn't find my way out because my garmin is not up to date. It can't figure out that the rivonia offramp is different. I wonder how i'm supposed to update the software and maps.... I feel so untechfriendly with my garmin but am great with my iPhone.

Waze is free. So if you're looking for a temporary solution, you can't lose by trying it out.

I'm not calling you a liar or anything, thed33p. But when I look at the app in the iTunes store, I see "Top in-App Purchases: 1 Month update for $5.99, 12 months for $37.99" and so on. So are you speaking from experience here?

Are you sure you are getting actual maps for free? My Start also gets connected and downloads something from time to time for free. Not maps, just new speedtrap locations. (I'm too cheap to buy new maps at tomtom's prices. I figure at what they charge, I can use it for 2 years and buy a whole new one.)

I'm a TomTom app user but during a recent trip to the UK I used Skrobbler and it was actually pretty good - not TomTom good but still got us from A to B without problem. It relies on openmap so I'm not sure how good SA coverage.

Also tried Waze in the UK and it was a real wazte [sic] of time.

I've got a feeling those in app purchases are for Traffic. My app shows one month costing £3.99 and one year £26.99 which corresponds fairly closely.

Was the maps application on the phone no help?

Yes. The software is pretty much identical.

Pity. It makes it a huge pain to use. If you don't know under what 'city' TomTom have classified the road you can't find it.

Last time I used Waze the routing was terrible. Route it calculated home was twice as long as the one I usually take (which Garmin & Nuvi has no problem with).

OK, that is clear, thanks. It is not a commitment from their side that there will be a new map in version 1.11, though. In fact, there might only be one in 1.20 or 2.0. Whenever that comes out.

In any case, let's all wait and see what iOS 6 brings.
