Thread: Best and worst tech buys: Tell us and win

Best Buy: A combination of tech including:
Optima HD 20 1080p projector, Onkyo/Jamo HT system, Playstation 3, HD PVR. This combination has changed the way we watch sports, movies, play games or just watch TV. I prefer my setup at home to going to the movies. Picture quality is 100 times better. Watching the 2010 world cup final at home was an experience in itself

    Worst Buy:
Playstation Move bundle. Used it for a week or 2, now it's collecting dust. I think it may be useful for guiding planes onto runways at the airport Hmm maybe the car guards could use it for helping people to parallel park

    Best buy:

LG IPS 235 monitor. Cant describe how great the image quality is. Having a nice screen really improves the use of a computer, as its the most important output device, and most people ignore its importance.

    Worst buy:

TRL Tech R299 10gb account, which without telling us, suddenly jumped up to R380, and then they decided to steal R1100 from my mom, and haven't paid us back yet

Best : MSI E350IA-E45 AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, dual core) AMD Hudson M1 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo

Worst : Dstv - the whole package but in particular the HD PVR 2P.

    Best buy:

Samsung Galaxy Nexus: Easily the best piece of consumer tech I've ever bought. Beautiful, fast, and the sheer variety of apps gives a feeling of endless possibility. Even better now that it's been updated to Jelly Bean.

    Worst buy:

Er, probably a pair of Sennheiser CX-300II headphones. The sound quality was great, but they had a weird assymetric design that made them uncomfortable to wear and encouraged crazy tangling. Then at some point one of the rubber connectors fell off and it was impossible to find a replacement, so I was forced to use the smaller and less comfortable ones that came bundled with the headphones. Eventually I bought a replacement, and I ended up giving them away. I still use Sennheiser headphones (the sound quality and value for money is great), but now I pay more attention to small details like how the cables are laid out.

Bought my wife a Kindle a year or two ago. She loves it and I have a get-out-of-the-dogbox card.

    Worst Buy

When I still had time, I bought a TV-card for my computer. Waste of money and time.

    Best Tech Buy

72cm Goldstar television. Bought it just before Goldstar changed their name to LG. It is still working today, 17 years later!

    Worst Tech Buy

Difficult one cause I don't usually buy junk

But, cheap Sahara flash drives come to mind. They are very slow and tend to die on me

Best Buy : "Vodaberrys" aka vodaphones with querty at all Clicks stores. These are Acatels branded for the vodaphone UK market and sent down to vodacom dirt cheap. Works like a treat when you are looking for something that fits in your palm which is not a slab of glass or a brick. Shock tested- chucked out of landrover window and narry a scratch or any damage at all. Under R400.

Worst buy: Vodacom pre-paid data. 3GB @ R499.00 go on , pull my other finger.
