I am not sure about email loop on a PC or Laptop...but it is definately possible on a phone. One of my corp clients last year had this happen to one of the directors wives. She had a Iphone and her company email account. Something went wrong on their email server and it kept on rejecting the email and the phone kept on trying to resend it. They reported the phone getting very hot and the battery draining after a few hours. This went on for days apparently untill they tracked down the problem.

Next month they got a bill for R30 000.00 of data usage.
Now why you loer en kyk gelyk?
Is ek miskien van goud gemake?

We can load a alternate destination number for clients if the modem does not support SMS and there is always the option to follow your usage on www.vodacom.co.za

I wasn't aware of the alternate SMS destination. Nice service but pity it isn't advertised to the layman, who is ultimately the one who will end up with these shock bills.

The Vodacom site - I had an immense amount of troubles with it when I was back home. Eventually gave up and never tried again. Also wasn't aware data usage could be followed there...

How about a nightly email showing data usage for the last 24 hours. iBust used to do that...

Are you using the default software, my old Vodacom software as well as my current Dell software both notify me of SMSes on the SIM. No limit notifications as it's on a private APN but lots of spam.

I have comodo firewall running. Nothing gets through without confirmation. Bit of a pain but I see its value.

Vodacom's website works really well since they redesigned it recently. You can track your exact usage at any time.
VMC shows you sms' received on the 3G device.

I don't think you can do much about this. It's the end users responsibility to track their usage. Networks thrive on non-tech savvy clients who don't monitor their data usage...
I believe posters are recognised by their sig... so I made one.

Sounds like Windows Updates might have played a role here. Also, just a correction on a previous post here: Vodacom's OOB rate is R2 per MB, not R1, so it is 10GB's worth of data.

Are you perhaps putting the sim into a phone and SMSing and/or calling, or have a family member/friend who might?

OOB rates are actually R1 or less on broadband standard contracts. It is R2 on top up/prepaid. OOB rates are the same as in-bundle rates for broadband advanced.

I doubt Windows updates played a significant role here as the bill would have been the same on most months. MS only releases updates for Windows once a month (99% of the time anyway) on the second Tuesday of each month. I know as I sunscribe to the official email from MS informing about updates. EDIT: If your updates are up-to-date, then the average updates per month (If any) are in the region of 30 to 50MB per month.

IMO I would guess that some sort of virus/spyware/trojan is mainly responsible. EDIT: So long as normal usage is assumed on the PC.

    Briefly read through this,

download the usage stats on the website.

Might be interesting to see when it was used and if it was consistantly used over the month, or burst usage over a few days...

Could be torrents left running or software updates / windows updates etc...

You are very likely going to have to pay this bill though.
Is it a 3G dongle or a wireless type device that everyone can use?

Holy smoked balls on toasted pumpernickel R20k?!

If I got a bill like that, it would be the day I jump off our balcony.

What happened to the good old days where an accounts had credit limits?

I am pretty sure arguing with VC, or any other service provider, is going to be useless. Is there at least something that can be done to "reduce" the bill? Or leaving it in your will for future generations to pay?

Hope you come right with this...

I am unable to accept that these networks are allowed to do this to us.
How in god's name are we made to pay these prices?
    Sorry Blu, just another statistic
