Public Cloud computing can be seen as a "Pay as you go" model for implementing and making available information resources, applications, and even infrastructure (usually in the case of a private cloud environment). This as opposed to a "Pay for what you intend on using" model, if you want. Public clouds also most often means that you share resources with other companies/organizations.

Some of the benefits of doing this is that you don't have to fork out a gazillion bucks to get up and running, and as your organization grows, you can either move from a public-cloud type design to a hybrid-cloud design and ultimately a private cloud environment, where you run IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and basically own the compute infrastructure you use (Servers, Storage, Network) and these resources are used exclusively by your organization.

Cloud computing provides businesses with a service based on the number of users. It's big advantage is that you should only be paying for the number of people using it. So for instance if you are a small business with say 5 staff using the cloud application then you only pay for those 5 people. As your business grows then you increase the licenses and then vice versa if it should contract then you can decrease the licenses.
Other benefits are that it is accessed through the web so you could easily access the information as you travel round the planet.
Fr a small business it also means that you do not need to purchase hardware or an elaborate infrastructure and probably most importantly the cloud service provider would also backup your information. The cloud application could be run in house as well for large applications in which case it is a private cloud or it could be a service offered to many in which case it is a public cloud. Don't worry about people having access to your information it is well protected and secure. That should enable you to talk knowledgeably or nod knowingly round the Braam this weekend.
