I've seen that dog before in a youtube video.

    I don't know why I'm posting this ... but I am.

Notice what seems to be a can of dog food next to the man.

    No, mate unfortunately not.

It's been tough - the diagnosis isn't great. The break in his leg is is at an oblique angle from just below the elbow joint. The correct treatment would be to have the bone pinned, but we're talking R4k to R6k to have that done and however much I'd like to, I can't spend that kind of money.

At present the leg is very tightly bound at such an angle as to discourage him from trying to use it. If we're lucky, and he remains as cooperative as he's been, that might be sufficient to see it heal acceptably. However, the decision on how to proceed has got to be made within a week; I hope we'll find his owners in that time but, given his less than impressive pedigree, I doubt they'd be in a position to foot that kind of bill either. That's if he wasn't simply dumped...

In spite of the leg he's doing OK though. He's eating well, and he finally found a spot he was happy to relieve himself without trying to lift his leg; as you could imagine that overriding urge of the male dog is tricky to pull off when you're starting out on 3 legs!

I'm not ashamed to say I'm really struggling with this...

Take him to FORA behind Westgate. They'll take good care of him and they're a no kill shelter.

Thanks for that Nick, I wasn't aware of them. To be frank however, I am loath to do that. I might be wrong (I'll give them a call to confirm my suspicions) but I doubt a shelter would be in the position to perform the surgery either. Which means he'll likely have to go without either way, and I'm quite certain he'll have a more fulfilling existence with us than waiting out his days in a shelter...

My judgement is probably clouded by emotion at present but the plan, I think, is this: The posters will go up in the local SPAR and petshop today. All the vets in the area, and the SPCA down the road, already have the details and photographs. If his owners don't surface I'll keep an eye on him as the next week goes by - if he stays off the leg, it should be OK. After 3 weeks we can have some follow-up x-rays done to see how the break is mending. From there we'll make it up as we go along.

I've sent an email to FORA with all the detail I could muster, including the pooch's x-rays - I'll let their response guide my further actions. Thanks again, Nick.

And to everyone else, thank you all for your kind words. It is highly appreciated.

You are a saint! Well done... Our dog is also a stray(wife's parents picked him up at Badplaas - they said either take him off the property or they'll let him be put down), albeit in much better condition, and he is the most well-mannered dog ever.

Looks like adversity makes for the best pets.

Do you think he could heal properly in time without an operation? Will be sad to see such a beautiful animal go down.

Go down he won't, not without a fight. If he ends up with a slightly manky leg, then so be it - I've seen dogs deal with much worse.
