That's a relatively old-ish SLR camera, and you're going to drop about another R2k -R4k on getting decent lenses for it - so with a budget of R3k, I wouldn't recommend you go for this. If you want to be able to take a wide variety of photos (from close-ups to zoomed wildlife photos) with such a limited budget, then an SLR is not the ideal choice.

Rather don't get an SLR, get a bridge camera (like the Canon SX40is or Fuji or Nikon equivalents) that has wide-angle and lots of zoom and takes decent pics. If you're a noob then you'll end up just using the SLR on auto the whole time anyway and you'll need to change lenses to move between wide-angle and zoom. SLR Lenses cost a great deal of cash.

With 3k you can get some very nice, decent Bridge or compact cameras that will suit you well.

This is sage advice. A decent SX30is should be within your budget 2nd hand otherwise try stretch to 4k for the sx40is.
If you go he SLR route you will need to drop another 15k just to cover lenses from macro through to 600mm

+1 for bridge camera or maybe even a compact super zoom.

One example: Canon PowerShot SX260HS has 20x optical zoom which is equivalent to 25mm to 500mm on a 35mm frame.
It can take full HD video and you can slip it in your shirt pocket instead of lugging a bag of DSLR equipment around.
It costs just under R3000 locally (ORMS).
