Thread: Is this achievable?

  1. #1

    Lightbulb Is this achievable?

Here goes another question for the experienced and somewhat intellectually astute'.

I got this friend (Extremely Smart) who basically wants to get two qualifications at the same time. He is currently enrolled at a University of technology (same one I want to go to) doing his Dip in Mechanical engineering but want''s to eventually obtain a B.Tech and what he would like to do now is to enroll part time at UNISA for a Business diploma and still still continue with his Mech eng Diploma AT THE SAME TIME. He would like to have two qualifications at the end of at-least four years. His reasons? Well I don't know but he seems pretty determined. So now what I'm asking you guys is is this achievable, is it allowed, is it a gd idea and what advantages could it have for him even if not now but in the near future?

I have a colleague that obtained 2 doctorates at the same time. One in Chemistry, and the other in Bussiness Administration. This was after he did his Msc and MBA at the same time.

I stand under correction, but as far as I'm aware, you're not allowed to study at two different institutions at the same time.

Correct... AFAIK you can however request permission from one institution, best would be UNISA, who can approve it on a discretionary basis.

I know someone who did B.Sc and then E/E Engineering. He didn't want to do a masters in Engineering but rather in Physics so he wanted to do his masters in Laser Physics. But you need an honours first. But because he was the best engineering student the previous year and a certified genius, they allowed him to do his honours and masters at the same time.

And what job is he doing now ... programming.

And I also worked with a guy who had a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering (from Europe nogal). What did we do?
you guessed it, programming. I only have a tech diploma, but I was making more money.

You need permission from UNISA to study at another institution. Although it's not really clear to me what they will do if they find out.

There are rules at most Universities which prohibit you from studying at 2 institutions at the same time. It can be done, without declaring but you have to make sure that the exam dates don't clash and if they do, too bad, you can't say anything.

I did a Diploma and a Master's Degree at the same time. Didn't say anything and only I knew that I was doing both at the same time. I however knew that I was breaking a rule somewhere along the line but they weren't specific about it being a degree and a diploma.

Two different qualifications at the same institution won't be allowed. I had a couple of credits and was trying to do a B Comm in 2 years, and it got disallowed. Did 14 subjects in the first year, and needed to do another 14 in the second year and I was only allowed 12 subjects in year 2. I could easily have done the extra 2 subjects, but there was rule which said that you can't complete a 3 year degree in 2 years (stupid rule).

Depends on the university. I studied with a bunch of guys who did both B.Comm IT and B.Comm Econ due to the large amount of overlapping subjects they had available to them.
