Thread: I don't understand why people spend big on cars

It's a lifestyle choice. I get a lot of enjoyment from my car.

You shouldn't have to understand. How people spend (or "waste") their hard earned cash (or by way of nepotism) should have no effect on you.

And some people will never understand why you'll buy a piano for the same price as a car.

    Buy a keyboard.
    I've made a huge mistake.

Oh yes you can, when the company is no longer paying for the tickets

Nope. It has been said many, many times that its better owning a small house in the best suburb you can afford, rather than a huge palace an in average suburb.

And now I know why cars in this country is so expensive. If they were any cheaper, they would be regarded as "cheap' and nobody would buy them. I sometimes do the math when I watch top gear and other overseas programs, and it amazes me how much more we pay here (I do use the current currency conversion rates) for lower quality cars.

Buy second-hand, the first owner took the biggest depreciation knock for you.

Quite simple really. A really small place in a good suburb, like Sandhurst, will always be in demand, because people want to buy into the area and the expensive houses around you attract well-off neighbours. Plus house prices in good areas increase more in value over time than houses in undesirable suburbs.

On the other hand, a massive house in the middle of a dodgy suburb will be very hard to sell, because people don't want to live there.

Most properties fall between those two extremes.

They do it to expedite the time it takes to get to holding-hands stage.

This is what I usually do, but for instance when my wife wanted a new car, it had just been launched and for once in her life she wanted the exact colour, interior spec and options that just weren't available. She now has a really unique looking car that people compliment her on.

But generally, I agree that new cars are a huge financial knock to take - if you can handle it, great for you. But I can't. I would rather change second hand cars every few years.

But why? What is it with this buy-for-the-dump mentality!?

Makes sense. Thank you for that.

Probably because you have to when buying second hand :P

    I kid.

It's the same with electronic tech though. Do you buy midrange every year or top of the range every two years?

if i could have my way, i'd be driving a nice clean 99 model honda ballade 180i.
    cash buy- check
    airbags- check
power steering, air con, central locking, ab ,electric windows/mirrors -check
    leather -check
    reliability - unrivalled.
    maintenance costs, servicing etc -negligible!

    ..
    .
instead i'm sitting with 6k in car payments..1,2k insurance, 2k fuel..
    sigh..
6k x 5 months.. would be great to take the wife to thailand every 6 months.. somehow thats a helluva lot more comfortable than sitting on the N1 staring at the new road bridge..no matter how plush the germans make em!

The Toyota Hilux's actually seem like good brand new buys as when i was looking for a 2nd hand car the amount you'd pay for a 2nd hand Hilux with 100k Km milege was not that far off in price compared to a brand new hilux, so i personally feel that if you do your homework right and just look after your cars you shouldn't get that great a loss, same goes for a merc.
