I'm pretty sure they're bat-**** insane. It's a superb car, make no mistake, but at the end of the day it's a half a million Rand Golf. If I were to look at spending that sort of money on a car, I'd be looking at toys for the weekend such as a Porsche or if I were the type, some capable 4x4. To spend that on something you're going to commute with, I simply don't understand.

I was working under the assumption that you're paying the 300-odd out of pocket. I get a car allowance as well and SARS have been clamping down more and more severely on them. These days, if I were doing 90% of my driving on company time, I'd probably be driving something closer to R400k (Let's say R10k as your monthly installment, just to make it simple, minus 10% for personal km, leaving R9k. 40% down from R9k is about R5k pm for a relatively expensive car, which is not that insane if you're spending a lot of time in it), but since I only do a relatively small percentage, I can only deduct a relatively small amount from my tax.

People Driving a fancy car = trying to impress people they dont know. (hey! do you know you?! no! but there you are!)

People buying a fancy house = trying to impress people they DO know. (hi ma, this is my house - sweet, im starting a family here, and invest in this property)

If you can afford the car, go for it.

    Your money, your decision.

This is pathetic. If you can afford a fancy car ir house and you want it, why not. By your logic, everyone should be driving a Corsa or a Yaris, just to look average and not impress anyone.

Yes! What others think is important you know! Wouldn't want them to think you're trying to impress them, that's trying too hard. Rather, drive a car that hurts your feet.

The N1 between Joburg and Pretoria can be quite interesting. I've seen a Ferrari burn out as well.

When I lived that area, I went up and down that road for 3 years and never saw a car burning...

Your sample size is to small. Try driving it for 10 years

My thing is I love cars. Luckily I can afford my cars. However I don't judge if someone drives a car worth as much as their house - If you driving you'r an adult, and you can spend your money as you like (or not spend it and let your car get repossessed)

As my friend justifies it, you can sleep in your car but you can't drive your house....

I'm not sure that once you've been training yourself for years to distinguish between buying assets vs liabilities, needs vs wants etc, that you will ever justify spending R1m on a car once you make it. I don't think I will.
