Eskom price hikes are a blow to industry

The proposed 14.6% increase over each of the next five years would put further jobs at risk

    Madness, I tell you.

Over the past three years I have seen my household's average electricity expense go from about R1k to over R2k and closer to R3.5k in winter. This is borderline unaffordable, but if they carry on with these huge increases a normal summer month for a three bedroom home will cost about R3.5k and a winter month something like R7k!! Add to this food prices that are rocketing above inflation and crazy petrol costs and it doesn't seem impossible that an average household will end up spending R20k pm just on electricity, food and fuel.

An economist would say that this probably says something more about the value of money rather than anything else - at least it would if our incomes were increasing at the same rate. In fact, if that was the case, my income should have tripled over the last five years because it certainly looks as if my expenses have. I wish.

And as per usual there will probably be significant backhand deals going on. Also affirmative action.

Start your own business... that way you can do what all SA businesses do... pass the increase on to the consumer!

The middle class, once again, will get screwed over the worst, cause the wealthy can afford it(or they business owners, read above), and the poor still just get their "free" allowance!

It's shame that we have a useless goverment. They know their voters get free electricity, the middle class has to pay for everything else. But consumers will spend less, so business will suffer, less jobs, more unemployment.. noice hey guwament. O wait.. just blame apartheid again.

Wait till the free medical levy comes into play, more taxes.

Time to get a new goverment.

This is the result of the Federal Reserve printing more money to cover the debt they created in the first place.

Thus it is the result of American greed : the whole world pays because all currencies are linked to the Dollar.

I dont know who knows, but every increase the rebate on renewables becomes less and less, it will not be here forever and need to be taken advantage of. Does anyone know where legislation stands on private energy producers at this point? Light at the end of the tunnel? I am sure the metros would be fairly keen to look in to this as an option to reduce price, but improve profit. Hell it would allow farmers with Hydro etc to sell back in to the grid which all adds up.

It is unfotunately so that South Africa is heading for a total collapse. This collapse cannot be stopped anymore.

Current consumers and tax payers can no longer carry the burden placed on them by government and insitutions like Eskom. We have about 5 million tax payers that amount to all the tax revenues, yet there is about 54+ million people in the country.

With our current economical climate another eskom increase will make it difficult (if not impossible) for the middle - and lower class income to pay these fees.

Nothing good can and will come from this and I predict a total economical as well as social-economical collapse for South Africa within the next 5-10 years.
