License disk renewal cost WTF

Ok, so I just came back from the post office nearly R1000 poorer.

I went to renew my license disk for my car and bike and I'm a little baffled as to how they work this out.

My car disk expired in April
My bike disk expired in April.

Car cost - R660 (rounded off cant remember exact amount)
Fee - R370
Debt fee - R260
Service fee - R36

Bike cost - R250
Fee - R140
Debt fee - R80
Service fee - R36

There is no way that arrear penalties are that much. Ive paid these penalties in the past.

My question is, how much should a license disk for a car and for a bike cost?

How do they work out arrear costs?

I obviously wont be getting my money back since I imagine the dispute process not being worth the effort.

Thats what I paid last month, or there about. To me the debt fee seems crazy.

By my calculation you would have saved almost R400 if you renewed in April as you should have. Penalties are school fees to help you to remember next year.

My Camry was R318 + R36 last Nov and will go up again this year. Don't forget the amount varies according to vehicle weight (and province as well I think).

Is it more or less than what you expected? I think mine was higher than that, but my car gets renewed in Cape Town. Maybe they have a higher tariff or something.

Geez... Thats hectic. I remember it being a lot less. The arrear penalties just seem excessive.

I went onto Pay City and they quoted me a completely different amount, as did QforU, which was cheaper by about R100 for the car.

I guess its not even worth fighting for. Lesson learnt, renew on time...pay pay pay pay...tax tax tax tax...it never ends...bastards!!!!

renewed mine yesterday, was R384 + R786 in penalties because I'd forgotten to renew last year

The license renewal is based on the weight of the car. There are certain categories like:

0 - 1000kg
1000kg - 1200kg
1200kg - 1600kg
1600kg - 2000kg
2000kg+

The actual rates and categories depends on the province you're in. The penalty for late payment is around R130 and thereafter you pay the additional amount for the number of months late. In your case around R130 + R370/12*4 = R253.33. This is where the R260 comes from. Your real penalty is only the R130 plus the service fee of R36. The other pro rata portion for being late just means you can renew later next year so nothing is lost.

Just be glad you dont drive a SUV, can easily be over R600 (IN PTA) and thats without a penalty for being late...
