    1600kg - 2000kg
    2000kg+

The actual rates and categories depends on the province you're in. The penalty for late payment is around R130 and thereafter you pay the additional amount for the number of months late. In your case around R130 + R370/12*4 = R253.33. This is where the R260 comes from. Your real penalty is only the R130 plus the service fee of R36. The other pro rata portion for being late just means you can renew later next year so nothing is lost.
Ah, makes sense. Thanks for that.

Oh well...I guess its normal then. Glad to know its not just me being raped...

A new Prado will set you back R 1350....best not to be late next year.

The renewal comes through the post - pay it then, and there won't be any penalties.

As I said in another thread, don't butt heads with the Licencing Department. They always win.

That's some crazy penalties. WTF? Thanks for posting /adds Google task to remember to renew all license disks in advance./

It would be fine if they offered easily online renewal or at least sent those renewal notices on time.

I have never received my notices...I really need a PO Box. Everything gets lost being delivered to my parents. My complex is useless with mail.

What you paid isn't too bad, I got a mean knock when I renewed mine in Feb this year.

When mine was renewed it was late, plus we had just received 2x traffic fines in the mail as well. Had to pay in the region of R700-800 as well that day.

Fines of R300 or so combined, renewal fee and late fee.

Had to drink water that weekend.

Penalties are something like 10% per month, with the next month being 10% of new compound amount.

    100 fee
    100 fee +10 penalty
    (100+10) + 11 penatly
    etc

problem i found with renewing mine in the month it expires is that the following year it falls one month behind

my licence expired the end of may so i renewed it in the last week of may ...my new license now expires the end of april 2013

    somehow i dont get that

    Fee - R370
    Debt fee - R260
    Service fee - R36
The 260 seems a bit excessive. I seem to remember the penalties being approx the same amount as the "debt" so you basically pay double for the months you haven't had one. So it should be around april/may/june/july at most 4 * R31 (370/12) = R120

You get 21 days grace period, so there is no real need to renew before the expiry date.

    That shouldn't happen.
