No you don't. They would have charged you for eleven months. That's why your expiry date changed. Just means the following year you pay for that month at the new increased fee. I take it you renewed without a renewal notice. Cos that would have been for the full 12 months.

Licence fees that are late are calculated as follows.

    Your annual licence fee
A 10% Penalty of the ALF every month that you are late.
A 1/12 adjustment fee of the ALF for every month that you gain. Adjustment months are always one month less than the penalty months.
    The R 36.00 RTMC Fee.

So if your car licence was R 100,00 and due at the end of December and you paid it late in March. It would be calculated as follows:-

    R 100,00 Annual Licence Fee
    R 10,00 penalties x 3 months = R 30.00 (Jan to March)
R 8.33 x 2 months = R 16.66 (Your new disc will expire at the end of February)
    R 36,00 RTMC Fees
    Total R 182.66

@OP. Those figures don't quite sound right. Either you have got the Annual Fee wrong or there was another amount outstanding on your account.

Yep. So you didn't save anything. You just paid for that month the following year. At a higher rate lol.

They adjusted your licence fee by a month and gave you a month less on your licence disc. Generally done if you renew without the renewal notice. Had you waited until your 21 days grace period you would paid the full amount, got your 12 months, and kept your expiry date.

    Yup.

The C Class cost me something like R500 last year. It gets rather pricey.

Be glad you guys don't live in KZN! Think we have the highest licence fees in the land

EC is the cheapest I think. That's why Telskum have all their vehicles running around with EC plates.

Really? I've heard this fairytale from numerous people.
I have yet to receive any license-disk renewal reminders or papers of any sort through the post for any of my 3 vehicles.

Trust me they do get posted out. Renewing a licence without the renewal notice means more paperwork for the licensing office when you do go in to renew it. You should receive it about 4 to 6 weeks ahead of your expiry date. Check your postal address with your licensing office. Loads of renewal notices come back undelivered from the PO.

Heck you even get renewal notices for Driver's Licences these days.

I was being Sarcastic, mostly because even though I have checked my address with them multiple times and it is correct, I have never received anything in the post from the Traffic department. Not a single license renewal form for any of 3 vehicles in the 4 or so years that I have owned them. I didn't get a Drivers' License Renewal notice either. Coincidentally found out mine was expiring in a month when I went for my Bike License test one day...

It is more paperwork. Trust me, I am acutely aware of it.
I have never been able to walk into a Post Office with a renewal notice and pay. I have to fill out those damned forms each time and provide certified copies of my ID each time.. and I have to remember and track the renewal dates myself. It makes me so angry.

Works in KZN too. If the postal addresses are right than it's normally the post offices that are slack.
