I got home just before 7. Ping was good! I played some diablo 3.
Then just after 8 I started seeing lag spikes.
And now at 9pm I sit with a constant local ping of ~300msecs. Sometimes much worse.
(That is the time it takes to ping something like my gateway or ISP or anything in SA for that matter)
Problem is DEFINITELY NOT SOLVED FOR ME

    Hi guys

I just spoke to WA support.
They say Somerset West (and co) exchanges are due for upgrade sometime this month.

Partly this will put up the speeds (384->1m and 1m->2m)
But as I understand they will upgrade the actual capacity of the exchange as well to no longer be so utter crap?
We can only hope Telkom do this right... :/

In any case latencies will remain bad for sure until they do this as they are not processing or doing any fixes until this upgrade is in.

This is only info I have currently.

Anyways consider yourself screwed until september minimum

Actually much better tonight in Gordon's Bay. Pinging at 25 ms to Cape Town, which is not too bad. Am getting 3.35 Mbps

Ping from Grodansbay to CT sitting at about 23-50 depending what server I hit.
    184ms to 8.8.8.8. Seems ok.

But the past few weeks have been hectic in Strand - at random sites would feel sluggish on our 4mbps line. I suspect insufficient backhaul
    ic's back, back again . . .

We had the same problem about 2 years ago at the Claremont exchange. A normal steady 38 ping to a Jhb game server would at best be around 80, but during peak times it would jump to around 300 with massive spikes to 700, etc. We had a forum running here as well and fortunately had reps from Web Africa and Mweb in the forum. They were working hard to help. The problem eventually went away after just over a month with Telkom never admitting there was any fault at all. We established that several other exchanges in the area had been affected as well and that it was indeed the backhaul between them and the main exchange (Barrack Street I think). It was one of the ESRs (edge service routers) that was faulty, leaving the others severly congested. When that happens they start dropping packets like mad which kills your latency. I feel your pain. Good luck.

So after logging a fault with telkom they came to my line without calling me first.
So they did a random speed test at a random time and tell me everything is fine. Well done telkom, you are a bunch of twats.
Anyways after trying to tell them it doesn't always happen they tell me its my ISP shaping me...
So they say I must use the telkom guest account to see that apparently everything is good... well its not.

This was on thursday I think
So for 3 days now as far as I could see no problem, even became hopefull thing is fixed.
But today the lag strikes again. I log onto guest telkom account and get the following results:

Here is a sample of how your latency looks .. to the gateway. That is one hop from router. Meaning anything local will be that or more. And anything international will be about 200msecs more.

    I even did a speedtest (Note that I'm on a 1mbps line)

There are lots more results here if you are interested (I even saved some modem parameters)

This particular lag time area has started sunday 5 Aug just before 18:00 and been going up and down quite heavily till around 18:30. Its now 18:50 and I still see some spikes coming through but its getting better.

Now to convince telkom that there is a problem...

When I had my problem, I used a program called Ping Plotter to record pings throughout the day to see exactly when it worsened - ran it for several days in fact. It has a nice graphical feature but they don't seem to offer the 30 day demo on their standard version anymore. The freeware version basically just does a tracert repeatedly, but the graph is the most useful part. I suspect that it will just show your latency worsen from around 8am then improve at around 5pm for a couple of hours, then worsen and only improve again from about 11pm. At it's best it still won't be like it was before though. I was on an unshaped account the whole time this was happening. I think there might be backhaul issues - probably affecting several exchanges in your area.

I'm having some packet-loss issues today - I'm continuously monitoring the IP address of I got from the 2nd hop of my trace route. Anyone from the Strand region experiencing intermittent packet loss?

My connection has been fine (in Strand North) but ill check tonight. It is definitely to do with a upgrade as the Strand exchange has been upgraded as I am syncing on 6MB now from my past apparently max of 4MB sync. I use 1MB uncapped and 20Gig capped.
