How to sort out hordes of pest Egyptian Geese?
Morning all
Egyptian Geese are taking over Wynberg (West) in Cape Town. from 05h00 to 11h00 it's just chaos, and I know other residents are getting ticked off too. How do I go about sorting out the problem? Is there a municipal pest control division of sorts? Do I need to formally lay a complaint at the CoCT offices in Plumstead?

Many facilities wish to and some have actually gone the route of putting plans in place enabling them to cull Egyptian Geese. This can be a lengthy process as permits are required and so on. The problem is that culling does not work. Both Roberts Birds of South Africa (VII ed) and BirdLife South Africa record that control measures such as shooting and poisoning have no effect whatsoever on Egyptian Goose populations in a given area as their natural survival rate is very high. Dominant males, a key factor in driving off other Egyptian Geese which may arrive and stake a claim for existing goose territories, may be shot or poisoned inadvertently, in which case your facility becomes a free zone for every goose that may happen upon it. This is a particular problem in the non-breeding season, when birds tend not to pair up and defend territories. The average territory per pair of Egyptian Geese is about 1 hectare in size but their home ranges may be much larger.
There is only one mid– to long-term solution to problems of high Egyptian Goose populations: environmental management.
