Phone dying, Talk130 renewal due next year, what to do??

Hi,

I'm on a Talk130 contract with Vodacom, on the "no phone" option since last year. Now my 3-yr old E72's badly on the fritz, cutting calls or causing loud static with frightening regularity. My contract is only due for renewal in March and I'm drooling over the current smart-phone offerings out there. Ideally, I'd love to switch to a smart package deal including a new phone, but I don't see how to swing this. Buying a phone cash is an option, although I'd probably want to add on a data bundle. Paying off my contract and porting may also be a possibility

Any advice please?

Go to Cell C. Their phones are separately priced to their voice package. Opt for the straight up 30 and take any phone you want. You will end up paying R 30 more per month for airtime that you may never use, but you get the phone on terms rather than a once off. Slip your old sim into new phone and off you go.

Talk130 is a Vodacom contract, I try to keep around the R200 mark. That said, I'm willing to increase this for a decent Android phone plus a data bundle

Not sure I understand that, Jay. The S2 on Straighup50 costs R249 pm, so I don't see how taking a R30 package would allow that

That's a better deal than the build your own contract.

Forget about the 50 mins (or use it elsewhere). You get the phone from Cell C for R 249 pm and slip in your old sim.

That way you pay just under R 6000 for the phone in installments as opposed to paying more than that now (unless you buy a second hand phone).

If you went for a iPhone, you could get the 32GB 4s for R 421 pm on the straight up 30. Toss the 30 minutes and take the phone. Bit expensive this way, but doesn't immediately hurt the pocket.

Not interested in the iPhone, thx. I'm considering either the S2, or HTC One V (Voda has a sweet offer on Smart Light), or a One S, which is a rare beast it seems.

Why would one take out a 24 month "no phone" contract ?

I was on the contract already and didn't need a new phone last year, since the E72 provided for my requirements. By switching to "no phone", I retained the bundled minutes, but my contract fee dropped from R315 to R185 pm. Makes sense to me
