My Subaru Forester has excellent ground clearance and also a short front and rear overhang, so does not get trumped by steep inclines coming out of a river. Suspension is a tad soft if it is loaded up, but have never had handling problems even on the softest surfaces, mud, slippery grass, dune sand.

Why these rules about a 4x4 trail? You might have superb car like a short wheelbase Land Rover but if the driver is ill-trained it can also be a disaster

I assume you tried to load yours with 1 ton of sand - did the wheels hit the body? Made the mistake of loading almost a ton of tiles into my Tiguan. Stood back and realized the wheels were resting against the body. FAILBLOG

Why load 1 ton of sand? This is a passenger vehicle, not a farm utility. I think for really heavy loads, you need a set of progressive springs, like large lorries have, so the second set engages when the body sinks under the load. Also, are the tyres rated for large loads, ie 6 ply or whatever taxis need

most people who buys SUVs / CUVs dont actually need or use 4x4. These soft-roaders serve the purpose - more space, higher driving position targeting the female buyer.

That sounds about right - Trolls have a habit of talking utter crap and then ducking when asked to prove it.

reason for the hate might be that the 4x4/AWD forester was blazing past his focus ST?

Give me a Jeep or a Landy and that will drive over the cars that is still trying to climb that incline. If I cant engage 4WD with a big 'ol clunky low range gear box, then I don't want to take it off road.
Sometimes I talk to myself if I feel like having an intelligent conversation.

Considering how good LR's Terrain Response is, you may have to re-think this attitude:

A friend has one of those and they are pretty impressive, more than just a pavement crawler.

True, perhaps started out as a bit of a troll but this thread actually turned out very interesting, learned about ladder frames etc for example.
Dont really have much to add to what has been said so just reading replies

I would say it's a real 4x4 since it has a low range transfer box.

EDIT: If I'm not mistaken it has a solid axle at the front and rear so thats pretty hardcore.

They're stupid-small and slower than molasses, but they'll pretty much go wherever you point them. Very, very few standard cars can compare on pure off-road ability.
