Former president Nelson Mandela was a genuine leader who put his life in danger to serve, expecting nothing in return, Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said on Wednesday.

"In 67 years of his life in public service, in our common struggle to build a non-racial democracy in South Africa, he understood that he would be failing humankind if he does not sacrifice with his own life," Vavi told a conference in Centurion.

As great as Mandela was, I wish he would have left behind a legacy that was opposed to corruption and self enrichment and committed to the safety and advancement of it's citizens.
Because as it is his legacy has pretty much been thrown in the mud.

    Mandela started the rott.
    Promises of free housing,electricity,schooling etc.
Then people expected the presidents/administrations after him to deliver on promises he made.

Although a great man in the regard that I honestly believe his ideals were correct and intentions good, his ideas as said before about free housing etc are of an impossible nature - made even more impossible by corrupt officials from top to bottom in government nowadays and an impossible act to follow up on.

Although he is seen as a beacon of hope and freedom, he was a terrorist and rightfully seen and charged for treason. I think in many ways people look at what he did and think as long as he did such things and is celebrated they could do it too if they felt their cause is just - which could be very dangerous.

It would be great if everyone in government learned and followed in his foot steps, unfortunately they are all pillaging liars, thieves and criminals and care for nothing but themselves.

Mandela should have apologized for the bombs.
Mandela should have spoken out against corruption after his presidency.
Mandela should have done more to deal with HIV AIDS.

But he is too old now...

Why make a god out of a man? Sure what he did was great for the country while he was the president. and then?

I agree, that a man should be sorry for what he did, even if it was necessarily to cause change.

However maybe he did (or does) speak out, maybe he was sorry in the end only to be muzzled by anc. The anc will definitely not allow jesus madiba to naysay our savours... the anc.

Because the people need a king, a god. They are very good at making those out of people and forgetting the actual person.
