I know very little about cars. What do I need to know about looking after it?

Congrats dude - Nice car but hope you don't get hijacked or it doesn't get stolen. This has happened to everyone I know with Polos.

Tip 1 - Never leave any valuables in your Polo
Tip 2 - Make sure you are fully insured
Tip 3 - Sign up for Satellite Tracking
Tip 4 - Plant a bomb with a trip switch so when they're stripping it some criminals can get blown to smitherines
Tip 5 - Enjoy your car while you have it

Keep it clean, always repair minor dings. Keep the carpets and upholstery clean. Use some McGuires polish to maintain the paintwork (use often, especially in summer). Check the oil and water when the engine is cold, not when you are filling with petrol. Keep the tyres pumped to 2.2 bars. Drive like an old toppie but not wearing a hat

Seeing as its a diesel, make sure you putting in 50ppm diesel and not 500ppm, 50ppm is better for your car in the long run, as for the turbo, ensure you dont just start up the car and speed off, always let your car warm up before you just take off, give it like a minute or so,this is due to the oil being cold etc. so you basically just letting the oil warm up so it spreads through the engine easier, just to make it sound easier, also what i do is i let my car idle for say 30 sec jsut before switching it off to let the turbo cool down, or you could just get a turbo protector timer, but i was told that with new models you don't have to let you care idle just before turning it off, but i won't take that chance, but most important, dont just switch your car on and drive full speed straight away , give it time to warm up.

Don't start the car and race off, give it time to warm up before hard driving and let it idle for 30s-1min, especially if you've been doing hard driving, before switching it off to let it cool down.

Also the original suspension bushes on the previous generation Polo's were utter crap. Have them checked and replace if needed by the up-rated replacement bushes. It makes a world of difference to the steering feel and ride.

Polish!??! You should WAX it often, but frequent polishing's not recommended. Certainly start a regular cleaning regimen, wash the car using a separate bucket with rinse-water and throw away your chamois (if you own one). Microfiber is your friend.

take the number plates off so you don't scratch paint, where gloves to protect the steering wheel and drive it like its stolen so the engine gets ridden in < just kidding please don't do that you gonna make me cry >:0

to protect your car from cracked headlights i would suggest getting those fake carbon light guards, even though fake, they still work 100% and do a great job of protecting your lights from small stones and debris.

very simple tips :
depending on the weather, keep an eye out for hail.... a lot of people don't do this and then cry because its too late to do something about it and then ruin a R6000 paint job ... or more

if theres a truck with debris in front of you, count about 3 cars of space between you and it, minimize stones falling on your hood and windscreen < even if someone is hooting behind you, just ignore them because they are most likely idiots who would grind on the trucks backside instead

potholes are not your best friend... keep your eyes open :P
