As the title says, what exactly is the reason for this? It is only with electronics, is it to protect the market in SA or what? Is there anyway around this or being able to get electronics here off Amazon? or are there any alternative sites?

It's usually for items Amazon doesn't stock themselves but resells on behalf of other suppliers.
Workaround is to use takealot.
Not market protection, but protecting themselves from expensive return costs on electronics. They do it for a lot of countries, not just SA.
As a solution, if you have a friend in the US, see if they'll post it for you if you ship to them. Otherwise there are a couple of companies that will handle a transshipment, but I don't have a name for you though.
Depending on the item, BH Photo ships camera kit worldwide and you might find someone shipping IT kit if you search the net enough.
Had the same problem, ended up buying through ebay.
IIRC this was news a while back. They don't do it, because the items get stolen to much after landing in SA.
Incorrect
Also incorrect (after all you can buy shed loads of other stuff and get it shipped here...)
Heres the real reason
The manufacturer (the guy ultimately responsible for warranty issues) decides where stuff can be shipped to. 99% of the time, if the item you are looking for has an international warranty then Amazon will ship it to SA

Not all electronics, just some. (Usually the stuff I want). Takealot is your best bet although it does add significant costs and takes ages to arrive.
Also not quite right about the international warranty, for example Sennheiser is well known for having a worldwide warranty system and Amazon won't ship any of their products here. Although maybe they're the 1%.
So y'all need to hide yo uzis, hide yo assault rifles and hide yo bazookas 'cos they disarmin' everybody out here!

Checked now on some other stuff that I know has international warranties, and also out of luck. I'm certain (Asus) tablets could be done in the pasthmmmm
Even went onto Amazon Global which supposedly only shows you stuff that can get shipped international and half the stuff couldnt be done, haha
