Default Google Nexus 7 South African Release

Google's new tablet looks awesome, any ideas when it'll be officially released in South Africa?

No idea but I will most likely be getting one when it does. Provided it isn't more than 2.5-3k because that would be ultimate SA style rip off.

i wish Google would do a delivery service like Amazon do with the Kindle.

Order direct, prepay duties/shipping. Delivery in 3 to 5 days. I must have ordered half a dozen kindles and each time ordered on Sunday or Monday. Arrived by Thursday or Friday.

Eliminate the middle man, they could sell millions.

They can't produce them fast enough for the US market. Think we'll have to wait a bit until they up production.

I would also love to get my hands on one.

This tablet looks really cool, but the lack of a microSD slot is a dealbreaker for me.

    I have instead ordered a Samsung 7.7" P6800.

That is in fact the best tablet at the moment. My 3c.

Yeah interested too. pricecheck has one for 4k, but thats a bit heavy. Should be more like 2-3k. 1.6k is direct conversion, plus SA tax, so maybe 2.5k. Fingers crossed.

    At like 2x the price.

Yes, but the microSD slot is critical for me. BTW, it takes 64GB microSDXC cards, for a total of 80GB.

Also, I got the P6800 which has 3G, the P6810 is wifi only and is somewhat cheaper (ie less than double).

The P6800 also has a rear camera with flash, and can be used as a phone, ie can make phone calls with the sim card.

But yes, the Nexus 7 looks like good value if you can live with 16GB max. I cannot.

The P6800 should cost about R5600 all-inclusive. The P6810 would be about R800 less.

1st, The Google Nexus is more a E-Reader than an Android Tablet. Think of it as Google's "Fire" or "Nook" tablet. It was not designed to compete against the 3G super-store USB gadget devices. Its a cloud reader that can play some movies & music. If you want the full Monty go buy a proper tablet but be prepared to pay the price.

2nd, Because of above fact Google SA will not be releasing/selling the tablet to local market as we do not have full Play Access. No books, music or movies means that the "Reader" will be a neutered experience with limited support. In fact Google stated that they will only see the device in countries with full Google Play access, well unless you gray import it that is.
.... and thanks for all the fish.

A quad core and next gen tegra nvidia games for a mere e-reader is a bit excessive :/

I understand it, but 16GB just does not cut it in a country like SA where the cloud is just not feasible due to mobile internet costs. Again, I accept that this model is not aimed at countries like SA, and that it is really meant to compete with the Kindle Fire.

It will also cut the feet out from under a potential 7" Apple tablet.

Still, it would have taken very little extra to make it attractive here, and that is my gripe.

They could, but that would have been the worse thing ever. Its how to bite the hand that feed you and f up the market in one fowl move.

Google Only cares about spreading the OS and making Google "ecosystem" the prime source for media and entertainment, Amazon's Kindle fire and Barns Nook was eating into that plan so they had to do something to prevent that bleed and best way to stop it is make something better and cheaper but also doing it in such a way that the other OEM's do not go F this and head on over to Microsoft World or stop making Android Tablets all together.

So end of the day you have a cheap entry to Google's Cloud with enough room for other OEM's not to treat you like competition.

As a Developer I think the Nexus 7 is the best thing since sliced bread and Google should have done this from day one giving developers a testbed standard to work on and OEM's something to use as a measure to compete against in both price and specs.

Edit: Being in a country where we can not access the full market and thus the device in question, is not Google's doing, that is our government's fault and we have the power to change that seeing that we still have a democracy. Yes I know we have more pressing matters like crime and education but blaming Google for our government "we the people" voted for is a dick move.

I am sure that you will see many of them around here, I almost pre-ordered one. Others certainly will, it is good value.

Also ordered one via a friend coming from the US, well that if she gets it before she comes next weekend.
