During windows start up my keyboard can't do anything, no F1, esc whatever. Only when I get to the login screen does my keyboard work. My previous keyboard, the one that I had been using since I got my PC 3 years ago worked during windows start-up.

What would F1 do during startup
Was the previous keyboard PS2 and this one USB?

anyway... check that USB Legacy Support is enabled in the bios. That is if you manage to find a PS2 keyboard to get into the bios![]()

The delete key or "Enter Bios Key" Typically works even with usb legacy support disabled.

How do I enable it? I enter BIOS and then? Just follow the headings?

Always have a PS/2 keyboard around...there are sum systems that will not let u use ur keyboard or mouse until Windows have installed them and now wat will happen when you have to use the inoperable keyboard/mouse to input a password to enter the OS? It happened to me alot of times...and with my PS/2 peripherals it is all breezy...well, until such a time where I come across a mobo with no PS/2 slots and then...anyway that is a scenario for another day.
For those who are unsure, USB keyboard support usually comes under Advanced BIOS, or Integrated Peripherals.
