Thread: Need help/advice: Car accident/ tow trucker nightmare

This needs a serious expose. I have only had terrible dealings with towtruckers and they seem to be scam artists / thugs / brutes / lackwits, all rolled into one.

I wouldn't bother playing Mr. Nice guy anymore. Report Majid for theft. Report the tow truck company.

As many are saying, you need to make this public. Fraud, theft, what next?

Ahh bugger the story is way too long in short here goes :

Idiot with Nampak company LDV write’s off my mother’s car.
Car gets towed by unscrupulous operator under false pretences
Lies come to surface, when they try and collect on the lies.
I pull out the fire, brimstone and all kinds of hellish things I set to work on the scum
They relent, we go away happy for now and move onto next fight.

Seems I managed to track down the correct person to speak to , whereas before I got through to an unattended telephone message for the HR Manager - I managed ot move onto HR Director and Risk Director. Also the accident management company has finally contacted me, so we're progressing.

    The actual post:

Well, well – allow me to regale you with my tales of depravity and downright dirty rotten scoundrels.

So here goes : On Tuesday late afternoon I receive a call from my sister informing me that my mom was involved in an accident.

So off I rush to go and help out and see that she is ok and everything else gets sorted the right way.

1st thing (whilst driving – you got to love the in car handsfree setup) I confirm that my mom is ok and pass on instructions , not to allow the car to be handled by any of the tow truck drivers.

I receive a response that the tow truck driver on the scene has been authorised by the insurer to handle the vehicle , so I am very happy that it is so convenient for an authorised provider to be on the scene already.

I arrive and start chatting with the metro police officials, first aiders and other folks involved at the accident. I unpack the car and get it ready to be towed away to the assessment centre as what has been communicated.

The tow truck driver is very helpful and assists us in moving the contents of the car to my own.

My mom is off to hospital and all is well , we pick her up and all of us are finally at home between 22.30 and 23.00 – the day is finally over and I head home.

Well 1st up the accident occurred because of some oke – flying up a 2 way and not paying attention to the vehicle turning right.

He tried to pass on the right hand side(the direction in which she was turning incidentally) rammed into the car and sent it spinning from the middle of the road – turning right – onto the left hand side of the pavement into a wall.

Now how fast did this chap have to be going to accomplish that.

Oh and the story just gets better – the Opel Corsa LDV – is in actual fact a company vehicle, which belongs to Nampak.

For the last 3 days I have been battling to get hold of the HR Manager – leaving her a number of messages to contact me so that I can discuss the matter and the course that needs to be followed.

I have been referred to her as the contact person. ( come Monday – I am starting to name and shame) After which I am escalating.

    1. Now for the real pièce de résistance, on Thursday – my mom calls me all in a state and says ”guess what ?” - the tow truck company/salvage yard requires R6500.00 to release the vehicle – or what is left of it.

Then I start asking the questions , but how if it was authorised do we have to pay such a ridiculous amount and I enquire from my mom whom she spoke to at the insurance company when they authorised the tow truck driver.

Well as the story pans out the driver was 1st on the scene and had enquired from her who her insurer was and he had handily called them up and gotten them to help her – seems like our friend fancies himself and his accomplice as a very good double act- they had put on the whole show and tell for effect.

And having just taken a very hard knock in the accident – she was easy prey it seems.

So now that I was aware of what the moffo had done – armed with fire, brimstone and all kinds of hellish things I set to work on these scum.

Told them in no uncertain terms, that I am heading over to the local police station – opening up a case of fraud and theft – should they not release the vehicle with no charge.

The storage yard, claimed driver is just a contractor and not part of the company and thus they can’t be held responsible for his actions. – I said see if I care – you will still **** bricks if I say so.

Contacted the insurance company and made certain they removed the vehicle – they agreed to release the vehicle at no cost whatsoever.

Go to Renew It and confirm if the vehicle is there.
Looks like these guys ditched the car when your insurance started asking questions.
Good on them if they did.

No don't got to Renew-IT just yet. Firstly Renew-IT cannot do anything to your vehicle as you have signed nothing with them. Secondly, did you sign anything with the tow-truck company?

Thirdly, time to report your car stolen, because that is exactly what it is - it is now a stolen vehicle.

Once you have the docket number, demand to see the owner of the Renew-IT branch, provide him with a copy of the theft docket, rake your car back and make sure you nail these bastards...

Be careful of reporting your car stolen. It losses so much value when reported stolen and recovered. Sometimes it would be nice to prove a point, however you would probably lose more value on the vehicle itself than what you would get back. Try and sell a stolen and recovered vehicle to a dealership....see how well that works out for you.

I'm sorry, but how exactly does a "reported stolen" car devaluate by itself?

I think that it's the process of having it deregistered once its been reported as stolen, and then reregistering it as a recovered vehicle.

About applying to deregister your motor vehicle

You must apply to deregister your motor vehicle if it:
has been declared permanently unfit to be on a public road
    has been stolen
    has been permanently demolished
    becomes exempt from registration.
The registering authority will then issue a deregistration certificate. A motor vehicle that has not been licensed for four years will be deregistered automatically.

Well if its reported stolen, the insurance company will get your vehicle back real fast. Not exactly in their best interest to suddenly pay out for a new vehicle.

You take a day off and go have a cleance cert done. Chamdor/Shamdor was closest when a friend did it.

    Go to licencing dept.
    Pick up a form
Go to Chamdor early in the morning
    Wait in queue
    Get clearance
    Go back to LD
    Submit forms
Get a new disc for car

    And all is well.
That car was sold a year later and no hassles...

    1) Stolen and recovered.
    2) Get a quote from a dealer on your car. Report it stolen and recovered then go to the exact same dealer and ask for a quote again.....see if it works for you

You would be amazed what companies do to try and save money on their vehicles.

The fake call to insurance is a standard tactic of tow truck drivers. I got duped the same way but luckily they were recognised by the insurance company and charged insurance rates.

Always have airtime and keep your insurance company phone number handy.
