    G'day mybb. i have a column in excel with data like the following "5138 rest of name"

    i need to copy the 1st four numbers to a new column as i need to merge to documents. it really is a lot of data......

    any ideas please. on a very strict deadline here

    Try the 'left' function e.g:

    if you have 12345678 in column A - formula =LEFT(A1,4)to return the first 4 digits.

    also text to column in data tab. use fixed width
